R-Tronic problems. Keeps missing 3rd gear.

When I drive my V8 on really hard. Full rev shifting in sport mode. The R-Tronic box keeps missing the upshift from 2nd to 3rd. I press the paddle at 8000 rpm's and the box goes into Neutral, the rev limiter protects to engine from exploding and I (swetty) press the paddle again quickly and the box engages 4th gear.

This really scares me. It's like when you drive a manual and miss an upshift. Has anyone else had the same problem???

I've never heard of this before.
Just curious - if you have the transmission in Auto/Sport mode and drive it the same way, does the car also miss the 2-3 upshift (that is, when you aren't using the paddle)? Or, only when you have it in Manual/Sport mode and use the paddle?

It only misses the gear change when I am using the manual mode. I had the car at a track day last Friday and it missed the upshift 4 times. I ended up doing the three 2nd gear corners in 3rd instead. All other upshifts work flawlessly!

Welcome to the forum. Please put your location (doesn't have to be precise) on your header info. Makes reading about your experiences a lot more personally involving, and sometimes it will make your answers more meaningful.

(Not an RTronic guy--yet anyway--so no helpful suggestion, but interesting topic: having said that: I'd guess it's a software problem. What age car? Is it fully up to date with any recalls/upgrades? There WERE some software changes in the RTronic in the first couple of years werent' there guys?)

My car is a 2008 V8. It should be fully up to date. I will call Audi tomorrow and ask what they think. They are however not very good here in Stockholm.

Just thinking out loud here... and I don't have the R-tronic so no direct experience to share:

I wonder if you are waiting to shift until the redline and the car is trying to shift automatically at the same time you are pulling the paddle? Although I would expect this would result in a 2-4 upshift, not the missed-shift problem you are having.

Along the same lines, do you have the car in Manual mode when using the paddles, or is it in Automatic mode and you are "helping" it by using the paddles?

It would be prudent to eliminate a possible problem with the paddle shifter by trying it with the stick under the same circumstances??

It only happens when in manual mode. It has also occurred between 7000 and 8200, so it's not an "accidental" double shift. The box really fails to engage third (just like a proper missed upshift on a any manual car). It has only happened when upshifting to third, so I'm thinking "bad third gear" in the box??? I'm not technical enough to judge...... ...whatever it is, it sounds expensive if the thing fails..............

Definitely sounds like a real problem, therefore you need dealer involvement.

Please keep us up to date and let us know the eventual diagnosis and solution.
