    Unhappy Braking problem

    Hi!

After a long road trip, yesterday while driving in town I had to break hardly due to a bus getting on the way. I ended up 1mm away from the bus! A cringing noise like iron sliding each other was coming from the breaks.. and the car didnt seem to stop it kept on going while the break was pressed at full power!
After a few kilometers I get a message on the display, change break pads.

Today I went and put new pads, although I put BOSCH break pads as the originals would take 1 week and I must travel this weekend.
After I went out of the garage, I break a bit hard on the first traffic light and I get exactly the same issue.. the cringing noise and the long range breaking. the breaking isnt as hard and effective as before!

A friend just told me it is from the ABS? although i find this very unlikely! perhaps the non original break pads?
    the breaking became very unreliable!

    Please any advice?

    thanks in advance
    Fabio

    Re: Breaking problem

I've read here on the forum that when the original pads are almost done (even before the replace pads warning is on), and yours are certainly there, that rivets from within the pad get exposed and touch the brake disc surface.

When this happens you are at risk of destroying your brake discs as well as those rivets are metal and not pad material and will cause damage to the discs.

The posts about this subject, as far as I recall, didn't contain notices about noise or reduction in brake effectiveness.

You should stop driving the car with those symptoms and have the pads replaced ASAP, and the rest of the brake components inspected.

    Re: Breaking problem

I just replaced the pads today and the break discs seemed ok to the mechanic at the garage..
the car breaks good although it makes this noise when hard breaking and i have a strong feeling it lost breaking distance. I am talking when hard breaking only though..

you think the fact of not being Audi breaking pads could cause this?

If you've changed your pads to non original parts, obviously that may affect the braking distance for better or worse...

I don't know anything about the pads you use so I can't comment on it but you should post the exact details about them maybe someone has experience or knows more about those.

I just know they are Bosch brake pads..
Although the noise was doing it already yesterday with the finished original pads therefore maybe the disc got broken as you advised you read..

Fabio: put your LOCATION (at least approximate) on your heading so we know WHERE you are experiencing your issues and your service encounters. It makes the forum much more personal and direct and, at least occasionally, it allow others to be of more help to you by having some shared experience of your locale. I would GUESS Italy, but let us know!!

I live in the UK, although I am temporarily in Bulgaria for work and here the Audi dealers are very unfamiliar with the R8 therefore it is very long process to make them understand the issue as they rarely deal with this kind of car..!

    Thanks for the advice!

    Re: Breaking problem

This is as much to inform my curiosity as to be of help to Fabio, but anyway:

In Europe (incl. the UK) does Audi "allow" you to receive warranty service on your R8 from ANY Audi dealer? In the US, they're pretty clear that ONLY "R8 approved" dealers should be consulted for R8 warranty work and make a slightly veiled threat of denial of coverage if service work involving warranty claims is done by a "non R8 approved" dealer.

Fortunately, in North America, they provide a 24 hr. emergency service phone number that can direct you to the nearest approved R8 service (which, incidentally, can be hundreds of miles away!!). But I'm curious how they handle this in Europe.

    Re: Braking problem

Assuming the rotors are OK, then try bedding the new Bosch pads in. I know nothing about the Bosch pads in regards to how well they perform versus the OEM Audi, (Brembo?), pad, but ANY brake pad needs to be broken in especially if you are using the car for how it was designed; i.e. high performance.
