    Squeaky brakes

My R8's brakes started screeching fairly loud(during low speed braking) at around 600 miles and the problem seems to be getting worse. I only have about 1,000 miles on the car and I'm thinking about switching pads. Has anyone else had a problem with brake noise?

    Re: Squeaky brakes

There has been a fair amount of discussion on this topic previously, and your complaint is certainly not uncommon. You can use the "search" function to help find those earlier threads.

Since no one else has chimed-in with a response yet, I'll give you my two cents....

Brake squealing is caused by harmonic vibrations that resonate at the metal-to-metal contact points on the caliper and pads. This includes the pad’s metal backing plate where it contacts the pistons; all guide pins and retention clips; and also the caliper slide assembly for floating calipers.

As others have suggested, lubrication of these metal-to-metal contact points with a high temperature anti seize compound is necessary to prevent the resonating and subsequent squealing.

Any good brake mechanic should be able to eliminate the problem by disassembling the calipers, cleaning off any rust, applying a thin layer of anti seize compound to all metal-to-metal contact points, and reassembling everything.

Hope that helps. Good luck to you and have a good day!

Thanks for the reply... I did search but I guess I was using the wrong criteria because I didn't find many threads. However, I do remember reading a thread here about brake noise so I know at least a few people have had a problem.

I might just wait until my first service is due to have the brakes serviced... unless the noise gets even worse in the meantime.

You might need to search for "breaks". That turned up some results, some people can't spell

road dirt, rust and brake dust buildup in the anti gassing cuts in the brake pads and you get noise from there also. a quick and easy way to clean your pads without having to pay labor is take the car out for a ride and perform 3 or 4 emergency stops and see if the noise goes away.

Thanks, I was thinking about doing that yesterday but it rained all day. I'm going to give it a try in about an hour.

First, the R8 is a high performance car with a high performance braking system; it's not a Toyota. As such expect the brakes to be a little louder than a 'lesser' vehicle.
However here are some things you can try:
Bed the rotors and pads in properly. Find a poorly traveled road and stop from 50 mph down to 5 mph as quickly as possible without engaging the ABS. Let the brakes cool off for a few minutes then stop from 60 mph down to 5 mph. Repeat the process up to about 90 mph. Then drive for about 5-10 minutes without using the brakes if possible to allow everything to cool completely. You should now have good deposition of pad material on the rotor.
If the above doesn't work, then have the back of the pads coated with 'Permatex ceramic anti-squeal brake lubricant' product. This works great; I've used it on my old GT-R which has notoriously noisy brakes and it even helped control the squeal of Carbotech race pads.
    Good luck,
    Bish

as bish stated that is a great way to bed in brake pads. if that does not help, you remove the pads and champer the leading edge of the pads to give a little "wiggle" room. i have found the anti squeal compound works great on the audi 6 and 8 piston caliper cars.

The OEM pads are already chamfered. When the pads are worn to about fifty percent the chamfer is also worn away, and the likelyhood of brake squeal increases.

Thanks for the advice, I will give it a try. Sounds similar to the ZR1 brake burnishing procedure.
