Any tips to extend cluth life on R-tronic?

I've heard that its best to put it in neutral at red lights. Also, avoid back-up and starting up-hill as much as possible. And supposedly, there is less clutch wear in manual mode. Any merit to these? Also, what other ways are there to reduce clutch wear?

I really don't think it's worth fretting about. If you search this site, you'll see plenty of talk of r-tronic's with decent miles still on their first clutch.

The car pings into neutral if you're stationary for a short while without your foot on the gas/brake anyway.

The computer does have to make assumptions about how to modulate the clutch in unusual situations such as hill starts and very slow traffic - and in auto it is always having to make "best guesses" - but you could drive yourself nuts worrying about this kind of stuff.

The problem with those things is that you'll never really figure out if what you're doing is helping, hurting or not affecting the situation at all.

Drive it to have fun, and don't think about the little details... when it's time to change the clutch you'll know about it.

I wouldn't expect much difference between Auto and Manual mode. How hard you push the car is what will have the most effect. Because all clutch operation is handled by the car itself, it will minimize slip within the limits of its design. It's different from a manual car in that respect. With a manual, clutch life is a function of how the driver manipulates the clutch, and wide variations in clutch life are to be expected from one driver to the next.

The computer will tell you when the clutch is overheating, don't worry about it.

Isn't the transmission the same as E-gear? There are some huge variations between E-gear clutch wear according to gallardo owners... some fry their clutch at 5k miles, some last like 15k+. Not sure why personally.

the hardware is - it even has the lambo bull logo on the r-tronic. The lambo e-gear problems seemed to centre around the early cars. by the time audi put it in the r8, they had learnt from their mistakes and improved it on the lambo too - and they have continued to improve the software over the 4 years since launch. the lack of constant posting to this forum by people with prematurely fried clutches, especially given the volume of cars out doing more miles than their exotic cousin, shows it's not really an issue.
