    R8 Oil Type

Hello, I am new to this forum and will be recceiving my new R8 next week.My question is two fold. What oil does Audi recommend for the R8 and is there an oil measuring device on board to determine how much oil you have.I am coming from a Turbo S and I am truly excited...Love this forum..Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your new car. Once you take delivery, the manual has all the information you need.

In the meantime, type "check oil" into the search box at the upper right of this page. That should get you started!
Note that the oil manufacturers have different "brands" on the different continents, and Audi's recommendations vary across the various markets internationally, so be sure to check the Location of the poster before running out to look for a particular brand.

The car has a dipstick on the oil sump tank. The oil check procedure is as follows, run car until oil is hot (around 100C), park on a level surface and idle for two minutes, turn car off and wait two minutes, then check dipstick. Follow instruction markings on dipstick as required.

At least for my Canadian model, Castrol Syntec 5W40 is generally approved for use for regular drain intervals and seems to be what my dealership normally puts in the R8s in Ottawa, Ontario, if you are using extended drain intervals at all, you can also use Castrol LL03 Professional from Audi/VW, it's a 5W30 for either regular interval based or extended intervals. There should be a very specific section in your manual about adding oil to your car, I suggest you read it, then purchase an oil that matches the required specification.

My experience above aside, I cannot stress enough, that you should simply read and follow your manual and get your oil at the dealership - then there will be no dispute of any recommendations.

Are you getting Audicare with the car? For about $1K it is an absolute bargain, and then at every service, the dealership should always be using the Audi recommended oil and all routine maintenance is free for 4 years. Congrats btw.

Audicare is prepaid maintenance available on new car purchases. Details are on audiusa.com. If you haven't written the check yet, you might see if the dealer will throw it in as a thank-you for your business.

Here in Europe Audicare amounts to 1K Euro oil change/inspection services yearly, paid by the customer. There is no Audicare, is there?

So "Audicare" here is costs $5.6K

Annual maintenance on the R8 is paid by Audi for the full 4 years/50K warranty period when you purchase Audicare. Even if you have to pay $1K for it, to me it is a bargain.

It's worth it if you live where you can drive the car all year round. If you store the car for 1/2 of its life and don't put enough miles on it each year to get it's oil changed annually, then it's not really worth it. The dealer won't cover your pre-winter-storage oil change under Audicare. So it helps to put on 15k km on the car a year to get the oil changed annually by them before storage. Otherwise it may not really be worth it.

I thought the oil change intervals were 15K miles OR 1 year? Hence regardless of the amount of time in storage and miles driven, you still under the terms of the warranty, get the oil changed annually.
