    Re: Oil Type

The Service Director at my dealership recommended Castrol Edge with Syntec 5W40.

Whatever you get, make sure it meets the VW502 standard.

if you want to limit carbon buildup use 504/507, 502 is crappy oil nobody uses in europe anymore

    Re: Oil Type

502 is for fixed service intervals and the owner's manual for US Spec specifically states use VW 502. Check with a dealer to see if there would be any warranty problems using 504/507 in the States. I think the biggest difference is 502 is for fixed service intervals and 504 is for variable service intervals. Some VW cars use a filter that requires 504 but I don't think a US Spec R8 uses such a filter.

My R8 is US Spec and here in Germany but I used 502 for my first oil change but I'll probably use 504 for the next.

Check the back of the bottle, I believe 5W-40 Syntec is VW502 compliant so you can use it.

Is there a better oil that I should be using rather than Castrol?

New ("Reformulated") name is Castrol EDGE with Syntec Power Technology - 5W40 is VW505 and VW502 compliant - check the back of the bottle to confirm.

If you have any reservations as to the quality of the new Castrol Edge with Syntec check out AMSOIL European Car Formula 5W40 which is VW505.01, VW505.00 and VW502.00 compliant.

Always check the Oil Specifications Label in your particular vehicle's engine compartment before adding any oil.
