You have answered your own question..
Check the oil level when car is in operating temperature!
Doesn't matter what's the level when the car is cold..

If there should be a problem, the electronics will warn you before starting the engine.

Follow the manual and you're guaranteed to be fine.

    Re: Cold car oil level

You cannot check oil level on a car like the R8 when it's cold. You will never get an accurate reading which is why the manual states the car must be at operating temperature. If you are even a quart low and bring the car up to temp to check the oil level it will either warn you of this on the dash or you will find it out when checking, just add and don't worry as you won't damage anything unless it's grossly low and when you start the car it will warn you of this.

    Re: Cold car oil level

Then you did it wrong with the M5 also.. Checking oil cold man.. That's like messure your thing before it gets hard. Nobody cares about "non-operating-status" and it just makes no sense :P
No for real, you don't need to worry about the cold oil level. That's stupid. EVERY! car should be checked warm. Through the layout and design of the Audi Engine it could be possible that you see nearly nothing if you check cold, don't worry. If it should be too less oil the car-interface will show a sign/hint that say this. Otherwise check it as said in operaing temperature!
