    6speed tranny issues

When im cruising and driving conservatively (shifting around 3-4k rpm), i noticed 3rd gear seems a bit notchy. Ive driven manual my whole life and i normally just depress the clutch pedal as far as its required to disengage the clutch and shift. However in the R8 4.2, even when i depress the clutch all the way to the floor, 3rd gear seems to grind a bit. 1,2,4,5, and 6 all seem fine. I brought it in to the dealership to have it looked at and the technician told me its normal!? I asked if the clutch cable needed to be adjusted and he said no.

Obviously, there shouldnt be a grinding noise when you engage 3rd gear.

Anyone else experience this issue? Perhaps a fellow R8 technician can offer some advice.

    Thanks

I'm guessing its a broken gear tooth on 3rd gear. Same thing happened to my Ferrari 360.

There are other threads on 3rd gear grinds..

It is somewhat quite normal in the R8 box..if you are not aligned with you shift correctly and or particularly when driving a bit slow or slow with your change.

It never manifest's itself under hard use or speed on a track.

I have posted many a tread on cable adjustments and it does definitely takes away the notch..if it is adjusted by a GOOD Audi Mechanic

Hello Toronto, I think it is worth your while looking at a thread I started this summer on 3rd gear problems. I didn't quite have the same problem, however, there are a surprising amount of people who mention 3rd gear problems on the R8. No other gear comes up, but 3rd gear comes up often enough to convince me there is a problem there.

Has anyone successfully been able to fix it at the dealership under warranty?

From experience, you will find enough suggestions ranging from it is normal, to it is absolutely not, that you will get dizzy from the suggestions. The best thing is to read up on the treads and once that is done, go for your past experiences of driving manual gearboxes and either agree it is normal, or don't listen to suggestions, and do what you believe.
These are the type of problems that are hard to describe, and only you. after some homework know what is and what is not normal....
Like I mentioned in my last thread, if it is normal, then why is it only happening on third gear, and this I have not had an answer to that makes any sense to me.

I have had this same exact problem with my 4.2 at 20,000 miles. It was a broken bushing. The problem was totally resolved. It is not a difficult thing to repair and it was covered under warranty.

Same thing happened to me. I got a new trans at 11,000 miles, but the dealer rapists charged me $4K for a new clutch, even though my 11,000 mile clutch was fine. So watch out for that. But you should get a new transmission as I had the same problem. And going back to 2nd would always lock up. Had to go to neutral and then to 2nd. And from reverse to first was the same. Piece of crap.

By the way, I've always wanted to mention that the R8 6 speed is not that good. I shift extremely fast, and I can always feel the synchros not fully engaging. It's micro seconds, but still there. Maybe I'm just crazy, fed up, or both.

    Re: 6speed tranny issues

I have had problems with both 3rd and 5th, particularly at the track. Sometimes I think I just catch the gate and throw off the clutch timing, but on a few occasions I have been blocked out of 3rd and 5th even with the clutch fully depressed. Some or all of it could be technique, but I have been driving manuals for 30 years and never had this much trouble. My '04 S4 had a linkage that wasn't as crisp, but I could shift that car much faster and don't remember ever missing a shift. I think I missed shifts on the front straight at RA 3 laps in a row in my R8. I'll have the dealer look at it come spring, don't expect much to come of that. A growing part of me wishes I had orderd the R-Tronic. This talk of broken gear teeth has me reaching for the tums.
