LED license plate lights - may have the answer!

I know there are a couple threads about trying to retrofit the LED plate lights in our beloved rides, but honestly I'm too lazy to look them up and add to the lengthy threads.

I may have found the answer to all our problems!

Today I was playing with my Ross-Tech, trying to figure out how to put the gear indicator on the center display (the GT has this and I liked it for the track - shows what gear you're in right there in a big, bold number). So, as I'm cruising through the different modules, I came across this:

09 - Central Electronics Module
Byte 17
Bit 7 - License Plate Light w/o Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) [LED Light]

Clicked the box by Bit 7.

Plugged in my previously purchased and unusable LED lights, turned the lights on and guess what - NO WARNING!!! I unplugged the lights to see if I'd get a warning and sure enough, it popped right up. Plugged them back in, cycled the key and NO WARNING!!! Woo Hoo!

It may just be the magic bullet we've all been looking for.

Now if I can just find that option for the gear display...

That would be sweet. I have upgraded my 2010 with the 2011 rear bumper and lights. I really hope this works. I was going to rip off the rear end of the car this winter and put load resistors inline.

Cool! Now we can actually use any LED bulb replacement such as:

No need to get the Audi one. I am using the above bulbs with resistors and they work very well though I would rather not have to.
Now, I just have to order some stock light housings to replace the ones I've melted.

Can we bribe desperado or any GT owners to post a vag-com scan of their ECU and compare settings? I also would like to have a gear display in the center console.

My girlfriend has a 2012 Audi Q5...the day she bought it I went to a store which sells LED bulbs, i paid $30 bucks or so and installed them. No errors, no flickering, no problems at all. Been running them for 14 months now.

Wouldn't this work in the R8?

edit: I just checked it out...Q5 uses the same bulb (6418) for the license plate light as the R8.
