    Steering Fluid Cap Alignment

Here's something you fellow R8 fanatics may like. The cap on the steering fluid reservoir was crooked when I tightened it down fully. I wanted it to be exactly horizontal to match the oil fill cap. If I left it slightly loose so that it was horizontal, then when I went around curves fast, the fluid sloshed out a bit. So I removed the engine trim there to see if I could turn the reservoir or the threaded portion that the cap screws to, to see if I could turn those to straighten it out. Neither were easily possible.

I did find a fix. I got one of those plastic packages (blister packs, I think) that are used lots these days, like what compact flourescent light bulbs come in, as a source of plastic to make a spacer. I cut the proper sized doughnut to fit the cap, and the thickness of it is just right to straighten out the cap. And it's liquid tight and seems to be oil proof.

If you make one yourself, be sure to cut the inner diameter large enough to fit around (and not on top of) the special rubber grommet in the cap.

Here's a before shot with the spacer there next to it, followed by a picture of it afterward. That's the Carbonio airbox cover by the way.

    cheers,

Or you could replace the O ring with a new one.I think the old one gets compressed. My cap is crooked right now. Fluid barely touched tip of dip stick when cold. I went to track like that since the level goes up when hot. My 15 k service is right around the corner. I hope all fluids get topped off. I should have/put a warning sticker showing new type /brand brake fluid (Motul) near reservoir somewhere.

Exclamation Re: Steering Fluid Cap Alignment

MTs' method is free. My method cost 2.00. We are in a down economy. How much might the Alp trip cost? Most expense would be renting the Spyder. I might just follow on my motorcycle. I have really been thinking hard about coming over anyways. But I am a lizard. Love the heat. I am sitting here in Sunny So. Cal. sipping hot coffee , trying to stay warm. Although while in Germany last October I manned up and rode the scooter in rain and cold. Like a true German.
