Ok all,
I just purchased a 2009 R8 with 1k miles on it. Did not like the color my 2011 came in, so I got this one for 24 months while I wait for my 2012 to be built. Anyhow, here is my report on the LED License Plate Lights:
Ordered a set of lights from David at Tunerdomes at david@tunerdomes.com and a set from Stanley Tseng at Onspire at stanley@onspire.com. Tunerdomes have their own LED lights and Onspire supply MTEC. Both companies indicated that their lights will not throw codes:
Tunerdomes:
Their lights have 4 LEDs on each bulb. You have to get the polarity correct, so you basically install them (which is very easy), turn on your lights and if the bulb is on, you got it right, if not you switch them around. Their lights DID NOT throw a code, at least not in my 2009.
MTEC Lights by Onspire:
Their lights have 6 LEDs on each bulb. You do not have to worry about the polarity, and their lights DID NOT throw a code either.
Conclusion:
On my 2009 R8, neither bulb threw a code, however I chose to stick with the lights from Tunderdomes. Reason, the MTEC lights were simply TOO bright, my wife could see me from about 1 mile away. I think 6 LED lights on each bulb is simply too much. I think the lights from Tunerdomes is what I would recommend.
Door Lights:
Onspire supplied me replacement LED lights for my door lights. Very simple, plug and play, just be very careful, if your door lights have been on for any amount of time you will burn your fingers when you go to remove them, they will be very hot. Please see the attached pictures for the effect. These lights also will not throw a code (it is really not possible, but I figured someone would ask anyhow...)
