    Wrapping Sideblades

I'm considering having my Apollo silver sideblades wrapped with either black or "carbon fiber" vinyl. I searched the R8Talk archives and found a number of people talking about wrapping their sideblades, but has anyone actually done it? For those that have, did you have the sideblades removed and then wrapped, or did you wrap them while still on the car?

Also, has anyone actually used a CF vinyl for the sideblades? I've found a couple of CF vinyl options (3M Di-Noc and FX Carbon Fiber). Can anyone comment on how CF vinyl looks and how well it holds up? Any opinions on gloss vs. matte finish?

I did find one blog post about CF vinyl wrapping the sideblades of a silver R8, but it's tough to tell from photos how genuine the end result looks:

Any advice would be most appreciated...thanks!

My CF side blades are wrapped with transparent vinyl, it will be no problem to wrap them in situ

    Re: Wrapping Sideblades

Wrapping the sideblades in 3M Di-noc will not give the same finish as the OEM true CF sideblades but if you want a unique look then go for it.

Here's a thought though, how about wrapping the sideblades in the 3M di-noc but also with a transparent wrap aswell to give it the clear-coated CF look.

    Exclamation Re: Wrapping Sideblades

C'mon folks...See my gallery for procedure I had a hand in myself...wrapping my V10 sideskirts in HIGH-GLOSS 3M CF wrap. Looks real. I even matched the direction of the weave to the rest of CF on car. (very important). Can I easily transfer pics from Gallery back to a thread?? Photobucket is on the FRITZ (for me) right now !!! I bet the weave can only be matched up correctly on side blades on one side...the RIGHT side !!!

Grab the "direct link" (http://www.r8t.....) url from under the gallery picture you want and paste it in the line they give you with the "Insert Image" button in your reply pane. That gallery link should also work for the attachment method if you prefer that.

Too bad the software doesn't give you direct access to your gallery when you post. It would be a lot easier.

I think the Gallery may not be part of the vBulletin software, but a third-party add-on which doesn't have full integration with the base forum software.

    Harrison:

I read with great interest your post re your positive experience in wrapping your sideblades in "carbon fiber" vinyl. Given the extraordinary cost of carbon fiber laminated parts from Macarbon and others, have you or anyone else you know wrapped interior parts with 3m vinyl with any success?

    Thx for your thoughts

    Re: Wrapping Sideblades

I do not know of anybody who has wrapped interior pieces with any wrap. I wrapped sideSKIRTS (v10) with a 3M glossy cf vinyl wrap.

    Re: Wrapping Sideblades

I ordered a spare ashtray cover from my dealer which I intend to 'skin' in the real deal, 2x2 procarbon weave. It shouldn't be too difficult as it's a simple shaped part and the idea is to start small-scale. And if it doesn't turn out right, then no problem because I am only trying it on a spare piece.

The theory sounds great, we'll see how it turns out.
