We drove 16 hours and nearly 1,600 km (1,000 mi) with our A8 4.0TDI yesterday, partly through heavy rain and fog, in the darkness and on rather bad highways.

My future wife, who until recently used to drive 100,000 km/year in S class MBs, agreed with me that there is simply nothing on the road that equals an A8 for long-distance travel.

It's silent, comfortable, extremely fast and totally stable. I reached 250 km/h (electronically limited) in Germany and the only thing I had to worry about was the other cars.

BTW the average diesel consumption driving (sometimes very) fast is around 11.5 l/100 km.

For the British equivilant, I recently took an A8 4.2TDI LWB out to an R8 customer and achieved 36mpg which for the performance of the car and its size was pretty amazing in my opinion.
