    R8 at Calabogie

Had the R8 out at Calabogie Motorsports Park this past weekend, playing with my new GoPro HD camera... here's a lap in the wet, just cruising around with a friend on the East Track.

(The video was really posted to help the GoPro people try and figure out what's with the static on the recording, but I figured I would share.)

Did you book private time, or was it a lap day? I didn't think Calabogie was open for another week or 2 yet

I instruct with various clubs. This was probably the first weekend of the year at Calabogie. I think today was the first track day that was published on their calendar of events. The Motorsport Club of Ottawa was having a lapping day and race school Apr 30, May 1-2. I was there with the Audi and had an opportunity to take it out. That particular session was wet, so I was just toodling around. The laptime was about the same as my racecar in the dry. haha.

nice! Do you instruct on the lapping days? It'd be nice to have an instructor who is familiar with the car

I don't know for sure, but think that's not static. I believe it is made up of two components:
    1. The R8 cabin buffets quite a bit with both windows down at the track. My helmet fits quite snugly and it doesn't bother me, but most other people comment on it.
    2. I think you are also getting audible low frequency vibration from the engine compartment which is being transmitted to the mount through the rear window.

Finally, with the gasket out of the gopro, there can sometimes be some rattling sounds from the lid.

Nice video! the engine audio sounds great.

    Re: R8 at Calabogie

Not hard to drive the line at 7/10ths in the rain Also going out on street tires that had only 3100 km on it made for some light cornering speeds so that I don't completely shred the tires.

The noise is likely the shutter button rattling. I need to just stick a tiny little bit of padding between the shutter button and the case to hold it with a tiny little bit of pressure so that it can't rattle, but also doesn't click down by itself. That could solve that.

The camera was suction cup mounted to the back window in that video.

Turns out that the best thing for wind noise (or other mount/camera generated noises) is to use the open backed case so that the mic 'hears' enough other noises to overpower the rattles and wind. I had the camera on the roof and door of the R8 as well, and the car is so quiet from those locations that all they get is wind noise. I bet if I stuck it to the back bumper it may pick up some engine sounds to overpower the wind.

Lovely car at the track though.

For those that take R8s to Calabogie, instruction can be arranged if you would like.

I noticed that above 200km/hr that the buffeting inside the car really shook my head. It was interesting to be looking for the braking markers and basically looking out at the world with the v-hold turned off.
