I did European delivery 4 years ago. Audi picks you up at the airport in Munich and takes you to the delivery center in Ingolstadt. My driver did security for Audi executives and was an Audi test driver. He was one of the few who got to drive the V12 TDI R8 concept. He said it was unbelievable to drive- over 230 MPH in the middle of the night on the autobahn! I think an R8 TDI would be fantastic-and think of the range on a tank of diesel. To me , it makes a lot more sense than an e-tron.

Audi R8 TDI Planned as Diesel Supercar

With recent news that Audi has axed its development plans for the R8 e-tron electric supercar, it appears as though the German automaker has a different powertrain solution in mind: a diesel engine.

Recently named to our list of seven diesel cars we wish existed, Audi showed an R8 V12 TDI Concept at the Detroit Auto Show back in 2008. Making 493 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, it looked even better than those performance numbers would suggest. The car, however, was seemingly shelved with Audi quietly ignoring it for several years.

Long since forgotten, Audi is looking to resurrect the plan and a new report suggests the car would be a new model, possible badged as the R10, that would sit above the R8 in the German automaker’s lineup.

In addition to a diesel engine, it would also adapt hybrid technology pioneered in the Le Mans-winning R18 e-Tron quattro, adding electric thrust to the wheels at corner-exit to deliver added grip and acceleration.
