How the hell do you open the airbox to change the filters on a gen 2?

My Gen 1 didn't have much standing in the way of opening the airbox. My Gen 2 however, does. Do I need to remove the mesh grill and body panel just before the spoiler to access the airbox? It appears to cover up the back screws for the airbox. If so, how do I remove it? I stared at it for a while, but didn't come to any safe and obvious conclusions. I checked the manual and it doesn't mention the air filter anywhere.

(And the BMC filter set didn't include installation directions)

Yes, the mesh and body colored panel in front of the spoiler have to come off to access the air filters. There is one screw in the middle of the mesh, facing upwards from underneath, and one on each side bolting the mesh to the body. Take these off and then push the panel and mesh forward and up to remove it; Audi suggest using a suction cup glass holder to grab the body panel from above as it's hard to grip. Once this is off you can reach all the screws on the air box. If you want to remove MAF's you will need secure Torx bits too. The Audi shop manuals have been posted on here by Shardul and describe all this if you want to search them.

Just finished. It took about three hours. That was the worst air filter replacement I've ever done by a long shot. Ugh. Supercar life!

The intake growl is louder. I'm not sure it was worth $500 and three hours of my time, but I guess that's what we do for our cars!

You installed the BMC filters? Under load does it sound any better? Thanks.

Yes, but the difference isn't huge. I mostly only hear it at lower RPM's under heavy load where the intake growl seems a bit louder, but in the higher RPM's the exhaust drowns it out.

Here's a video I took for exhaust purposes, but it's with the filters on. Maybe you can hear a different from it and yours? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igaXJ6teY3U

Thanks for the video. It did seem "meaner" when you were driving away from the camera. Is that a stock exhaust you're running?

Add a set of the smooth intake tubes we off er and the induction sound will be louder.

Hi serrated, Did you first remove the side engine bay panels? They seem to be in the way. I removed the three screws as above and the manual but the panel is not budging with reasonable force - it feels like its fixed at the corners underneath the painted panel. Also did you push it forward or a straight pull up?
