This may be a stupid question but if the TPMS menu doesn't appear, how do you know you've got it installed? You have to wait for the dash warning to possibly come on?

If every time a tyre (tire) pressure TPMS lit up because of changing seasons and cold temps, I (and my wallet) would go nuts.
My dealer would love me no doubt. How crazy that every time a TPMS needs resetting to have to return to dealer...

Ran into this exact problem today. New wheels and TPMS sensors - cannot re-calibrate - simply not on the menu!

For Gen 1, There are only two settings that can be stored into memory and once they are used, then it needs to be erased by the dealer. My mechanic friend was able to to use his vagcom and clear the warning light, but also had to pull a fuse since he cannot erase the previous settings. This is the stupidest design and why my M3 is so much user friendly than the R8 in every way.

I've just purchased an early 2012 le edition V8 (UK car), so believe that's a gen 1, which seems to have the TPMS recalibrate option in the dash menu. Having new tyres fitted trw so will hopefully find out of it works ok then.
