    Road trip UK... Oil leak....

Just returned from a trip up north, Cumbria, Scotland, Yorkshire, Wales and back home to Essex.
All in all just under 1,100 miles.
Stunning scenery, some great driving roads, and the R8 was brilliant every inch of the way.
Averaged 26.8 MPG and on a couple of occasions I accidentally ventured a tad over 70.

Have discovered a minor oil leak after return, seems to be oil cooler hoses, removed Left Rear Wheel and arch liner, the two hoses have been rubbing together and worn a tiny dent in one that seems to be weeping oil. Need further investigation with under panels removed.

Will update when I know more.

The oil return pipe is also in that area and is known to fail. It's powder-coated mild steel and corrodes due to chaffing.

    Thanks Trev450.
I have part numbers for the 2 pipes that have been rubbing together:

    420 117 413L
    420 115 687Q

There is a rubber disc like separator designed to keep the hoses apart at this point, but it had moved down the pipe causing them to come together.
is the "Oil Return Pipe" that you mention one of these?
or do you have a part number if not?
    Thanks.

Jon.R8.UK - the second number you quoted is the pipe in question. You will also need two sealing rings - WHT007432

Hopefully I will investigate further at the weekend, remove under coverings etc.
I will let you know what I find. :-)

Had a better look this morning, on a car lift with under shields off, and there are no further horror stories to add

It's just the 2 metal pipes as mentioned above, rubbing together and wearing through, oil leak is minimal, more of a weeping at the moment,
but certainly won't be getting any better of it's own accord in the near future.

I have ordered replacement hoses and all relevant seals, and hopefully I will be changing them in the very near future.

Order a new oil filter and combine an oil change with this job.

Had Audi service 1,200 miles ago, I will probably replace the oil that drains with new oil, but the filter is good to stay.

26.8mpg from a V8? From the DIS or calculated manually? Best I ever managed was 24.8mpg...
