    5kW @48V = 104A. So basic elect theory says 416A @ 12VDC as that is the power source no matter what voltage the compressor runs at. I think the alternator and battery would never keep up.
    I would say it is a wash. Regular turbos use waste heat to turn the compressor so basically free HP.

    Just do what they did on the Roadkill TV show, use leaf blowers.....

    It doesn't rely on the alternator OR car battery for a 48 volt supply. It has a "power pack" that contains a 48 volt battery, and uses the 12v car system to charge/maintain it. The system (this one, the Dutch Torqamp system) seems pretty well thought out. We would need one for each throttle-body I'd think. It could be a cool alternative method to F/I. I hope someone tries it.
