    That's the way to go if there's no need to change the pump. A wire brush and a rattle can of ht paint would probably fix it for life too.

    Boom - this is why I love this forum already! Great thinking you two... I'll try the scotch bright and if that doesn't work I'll move onto cleaning and painting.
    Thanks very much for the info about the pump and cams - I've learned my first thing.. awesome. Let the adventure begin!

    OP - don't be tempted to remove just the tops for cleaning. I'm not sure what would happen but Ricky advised me about this when mine needed a bit of a clean up.

    The thought did cross my mind before I posted here!
    Looked like just two star heads...but luckily the worry that if I were to open it, a load of springs and bits would come flying out, this stopped me!

    I used a brass wire brush today, gave it a rub over with that, then applied some rust remover, let that dry and brushed it again - come out SO much better. There's some slight dark staining on it, but that would be expected - the main thing is the horrible orange rust has gone. It looks totally acceptable now.

    Expect it will come back so will keep an eye on it.
