Hello everyone! I am new to this board but am looking to buy a new member of the stable and I have landed between a new R8 performance or either a 458 or 488 from Ferrari. There are too many reasons to list why I like each but the primary attraction to the R8 is: NA V10 engine, tech, looks and overall thrill without drawing an insane amount of attention like a Lambo. The 458 has the NA engine and I absolutely love it but already a generation back and the 488 I am not in love with as much with some of the changes but its newer generation and a beautiful care for sure. There is just something about a Ferrari that can't be matched but I'm just not sure the stigma that comes with it is for me but I don't know because I've never had anything like one of these cars. My daily is and will remain an M5 Comp so I have access to lots of HP with that but I want a different experience overall. I am blessed to even be able to have this choice!

Since this is an R8 board, I wanted to get everyone take.

Thanks!

There was a thread on here fairly recently discussing exactly this. A search should bring it up.

Good luck on your search...me personally was going to buy a 458 but i didn’t buy because it just feels slow to me and i didn’t like the normal seats ....overall i love the car...keep in mind the r8 was owned first
and still own.
Others here on the board have bought 458 and unloaded and came back to r8 and vs versa.
Good luck and keep in mind r8 is a well built german hand made machine.
Ferrari is a event ....different kind of car.
Cost more to take care in every aspect.

personally im a r8 lover and is easy to maintain compare to other supercars, if you looking to get a daily car to drive around everyday i would suggest you to get R8, if you looking to get a supercar and trying to catch people's attention 488 would be your best pick. either car wont be a bad decision so dont worry to much, just follow your heart!

Iv had a huge amount of supercars. In many ways the R8 is THE best of them all for a bit of everything. Given a choice of brand new supercars id honestly have a Porsche 992 Turbo...... but that said given the chiice of the R8 and the Ferrari's in your position, dare a say it i think id go for the 458, its an avent to drive, its never boring, you dont seem to need a good dd because you already have an M5 comp so you may aswell make the other car one of those cars you have to make excuses to drive because its niggles piss you off, the 458 will do just that, its not massively fast but its more than enough, its harsh, loud, obnoxious and thats what makes it so great to drive on occasion.

Ontop ill lob a curve ball and put my flame suit on........

The 2020 facelift R8 is junk, its ugly, lost all its classic lines and has become some raunchy RS looking model, its exhaust is silent, cant be redlined in neutral, no exhaust button etc etc. If you go r8 save a **** ton of money and get a prefacelift if you arent buying a prefacelift then 100% buy either Ferrari

You have never been in a 2020 R8. Exhaust button is right next to the start button, for the poser above.
For the OP:
The only 458 to get is the Speciale. The 488 is good, but the F8 is much better.
Depends if you want NA or turbo.
I have owned and driven them all and on the track. The R8 is a great DD, but storage is minimal. Ferrari and Mclaren have it better with storage.

Personally I like to personalise my cars with race-inspired builds.

If I were you, for the same money as a 458 I'd buy the 2020 R8 and at the very least get the official GT4 front bumper & hood which is direct fitment:

You add on the GT4 spoiler, some skirt extensions, wheels and other bits and you've got a car that turns more heads than a 458 IMO.

Someone like @R8-Stuff could easily source these parts for you too.

Looking only at depreciation, the 458 will be much further down the curve and I would expect that to more than compensate the higher service warranty and maintenance costs.

I agree with an earlier post that if your preference is an R8, I'd seriously consider a good low mileage MY17-18 that has already taken a depreciation hit - either a base v10 or a Plus with the lower ratio gearbox and carbon bits. Note the MY20 models all have the higher gear ratios.

I doubt there will be much change in prices of the 458 in the short term, but the release and availability of the F8 may put some downward pressure on the 488 values over the next few months. Here in the UK an early 488 costs not much more than a late or low mileage 458

He's in the UK and all EU cars no longer have an exhaust button. 4 satellite steering wheel has now become a 3 sat steering wheel.

FYI, MY2020 r8s in North America still have the shorter gear ratios, along with the lack of OPF and 602 hp.

Ah yes good point. I remember reading that on here a while back, but the hard drive is full since I turned 50. Did any NA owners ever find out if their cars have the upgraded titanium valve train components ?

As suggested I’d highly consider a 2017 plus with the better gearing, modify it to look how you think it should and make it faster (turbos) than anything anywhere you go. It’s so much fun lol.

488 if you go team Ferrari. That’s what I’m going to buy when I get one...turbos on everything haha

Each to his own i guess. Personally i think "ricing" an R8 turns a classy voluptuous escort into an absolute manky *****....IMO.

So, I drive an M5 as my daily, and have a 2018 R8 V10 Plus Spyder as my 'toy'. I couldn't be happier with that decision. My wife, who typically doesn't like any of my cars, likes the R8. In full disclosure, I haven't driven either the 458 or 488, but my plan is to have a Ferrari in my garage next to the R8 at some point! Of course, that's MY plan, not the wife's...I agree with others - I chose the 2-year old R8 because I liked it, and it was significantly cheaper, with less than 4000 miles on it, so like new.

Just my $.02 worth....

Owning an F430 and R8 at the same time, I can tell you your reception/reaction from other people is be entirely different between the two cars. Don't ask me why, it just is.

In the Ferrari I've been called nasty names, and someone even spit on the car when I ventured out to an actual public place in an actual parking lot. Many Ferrari owners report having their shields & badges stolen (with damage to the car), and even keying of their cars when they don't "stand guard".

In the R8 it's the complete opposite. I've NEVER had a negative reaction from anyone to the R8. It's consistently thumbs-up and smiles from any and all demographics. You can actually take it to the store, if you want, without fear of damage or harassment. Even at a Cars & Coffee somehow I'm "approachable" with the R8, and I'm a jerk when I show up in the F430 (OK slight exaggeration but you get the gist).

None of this may make any difference to you, but it does to me. There will be a pristine, gated F430 going up on BAT in the next couple weeks...
