As the earliest R8’s are getting on now, what’s the thoughts, opinions & price guides on this gem from the owners manual? …

“The airbag system must be renewed by your Audi Dealer or other Service Centre no later than 14 years after the date of manufacture.

It is important to have the system renewed by the specified date in order to ensure its reliability”

I didn’t know this was a suggested maintenance item. Does anyone do this in any car?
It’s very involved to get to the passenger front airbag in the dash and the side airbags in the seats.

That could invoke all sorts of insurance issues if ignored in the event of an accident.

Would it really? Are there insurance issues from people not wearing their seatbelts? There are laws for wearing seat belts but not for maintaining airbags. I think it would only limit someone’s ability to sue Audi…which seems pretty unlikely for a 15-year-old car.

LOL. Maybe the reasoning wasn’t obvious because I have so few passengers to ride along. “Zero liability is my copilot.”

Potential passenger liability would only be a concern if it could be proven that the airbag did not function properly, meaning it didn’t deploy and should have.

Given all of the Takata issues, those airbags seem to be a more likely target (debris being expelled during deployment.)

This is not an R8 specific recommendation. Replacing 6+ airbags on most 14-year-old Audis by the dealer would exceed the value of the car.

If you call the Audi dealer, I'm guessing they would say to call the collision center...
