Alignment?

OK so I dropped my R8 off at the dealership, and I requested an alignment because she was starting to track left slightly. (2011 v8).. dealer said it would be $299 for alignment... I thought, ok- a bit steep, but lets get it done. I just called to ask if the car was ready (24 hours later) and they said there was an additional panel that had to come off and it is gonna be $399 for the alignment. Is this on par with what you guys are paying? $400 for an alignment job is more than double what I used to pay to have my vipers done.

You've been goosed, alignment here costs around R$250 which is approx. $50 ! and there's no need to remove any panels that I'm aware of.

I've had dealers in PA charge me $300 for an alignment. I complained and I've looked elsewhere but it's the "R8" tax. You might be able to get it done at an indy shop for cheaper, but that's the dealer price.

As for him charging you extra - he quoted a price and now he's upping it. I'd ask him to keep his word. $100 more to remove a panel (I've never heard of that, but maybe?) seems a bit ridiculous.

I have a shop that charges me $299 (Canadian funds) and another that does it for $150 (Canadian funds). Both are significantly less than your quote.

And if they quoted $300, they shouldn't change the price to $400 (especially over 1 panel). You agreed to the original quote at $300. Is this their first time doing an R8 alignment? They should have known what was involved and $400 makes it a rip off IMO!

Im not necessarily complaining.. I just had no idea. #1 priority is that the alignment is dead-nuts on. I did some more searching and it looks like the indys around here charge 250 - 275 on the r8 and that 150 premium really is an "R8-TAX".. c'est la vie. Now I know for next time.

Is there an R8 tech at this dealership?

Regardless of the price being higher, I'd be concerned that they're "discovering" new stuff about the car as part of a simple alignment. That's like the shop saying, "we discovered there are more drain holes" when changing the oil - it doesn't inspire confidence that the shop is familiar with the car.

They call it a Stealership for a reason.

My alignments cost quite a bit less and I have mine set up with corner weighting and suspension alterations each time (every couple months). I’d find a better shop.

Run away! If they just now found out they need to remove a panel then they’ve never done alignments on the R8 before. Don’t become the experiment, lol

i think 300-400 gets u corner balancing, but most dealership or high end indy charge around that range for all exotics anyways, or even stuff like porsches. Used to have shops that do alignments for supercars around $100-150 but it's harder to find now, have to dig around quite a bit. Some guys with fat arms would require the panels to come off for easier access, but that shouldnt be charged on the customer. I had skinny guys able to do the alignment but their arms are all cut up due to the lack of room

What do you guys look for in alignment specs for:
-track
-"aggressive" street
-street

The dealer I bought the car from said they did an alignment but couldn't provide specs.... the car tracks straight, but aside from that I have no idea where it's at. They also replaced the front tires; I guess did not do the rears, but all four are now P Zeros with '19 date codes and good tread. So I guess they are going to be on for a while and it seems I should get a proper alignment to known good specs.
