Is this update to fix an issue, or just another version release?

probably smoother/ better acceleration from 1st gear and smoother shifting from gear to gear.
this is usually the norm on most shift paddle updates.
Ferrari's F1 paddles (f430) actually had to updated because it would stall on 1st gear.
and there were many updates for lambo's e-gear regarding engaging to 1st and accelerating slowly

Just returned from the Update/recall for the R8. There were eight items included in the campagin. The major item is the update of the engine & transmission management software. In addition, a number of other items were address including servicing and updating the filler panels on the small side windows (noise related), servicing the side blades (noise related), Servicing upper trim (noise related), servicing the radio (noise related, install cushion), replacing a breather hose and a couple of other service related items.

RESULTS: The R-Tronic shifts even better than it did before it went in. Smoother shifts both up and down. Launch power is slightly reduced making the R8 move even quicker through reduced cluth slippage. This new software is a winner in my book!

The wind noise items didn't bother me, but must have generated significant customer input because the cabin is now void of any wind noise. Usually a recall is something that one does not realize a benefit from. This one is pronounced in its benefit to the consumer. Kudos to the AoA R8 team!

Excellent. Hearing about such improvements and attention to customer feedback is at least encouraging for the many of us who have to wait.

It will be curious to see what if anything the ECM update does for a manual rather than R-Tronic....

Likewise, we had no noise issues (or sound system - never turned it on yet!).

I have just driven my R8 back home after this "campaign" was implemented. Significantly smoother R-Tronic shifts, particularly from 1st to 2nd.

I cannot get over the attention to "customer satisfaction" that I experienced from Audi USA. I called the 'phone number on the campaign letter and the "R8 customer advocate" arranged everything for me including the pick-up of the car from my home (on a flat-bed trailer) and calling the dealer several times to make sure everything would be done on time (I had protective film installed on the hood, door mounted mirrors and door sills). This service really puts BMW and M-B to shame (they have never made me feel "special").

Smooth as in DSG smooth? :)

Right, that is what I am still wondering about, as I have a manual and am also in the call up, but have not had it done yet.

i must say that upgrading your software on a manual will probably have minimal effect on your shifting...unless the r8 has a drive by wire throttle, you won't feel too much of a difference, either case, the upgrade is probably designed to smooth out your car a bit more. =)
i don't think upgrading will do any harm, only good...

Will Audi give me an upgraded head so that I drive better (faster/smoother)? that would be good.
