From what I can see, no external visual changes, the DIN size is greatly reduced, not extended depth anymore, it’s a smaller unit behind the screen. And now runs on the updated android 12.

Admittedly a stupid question...but I didn't see this explicitly addressed in the thread so far...do folks disconnect the battery before doing this install?

I've always disconnected the battery when installing after-market radios on other vehicles. My hesitation here is I've heard some horror stories of people disconnecting the battery on the R8s (gen 1 owner here).

Anyone changed out their interface on these head units yet? I’m kind of bored with the factory one.

I don’t have an android so I assume I’d have to use WiFi to log into a Google account to make any app purchases.

But might be worth it to freshen up the Home Screen to something new.
