Gearbox Malfunction- 2011 V10 21k miles

Hello all,
My 2011 V10 just turned 21k mles and I’ve owned it since it had 5600 mles and had bought it in August 2020.

I was getting on the highway from a ramp and was using paddles and I believe I downshifted to 2nd when I should have really either were to be in 3rd or maybe 4th and boom the Gearbox Malfunction popped up. I drove the car about 40 or so miles and it shifted totally fine but I drove it in Auto mode.Got home and plugged in my OBDeleven and it popped P0944- Hydraulic Unit Loss of Pressure code.
So I cleared the code and drove it to work the next day and it drove just fine and that was 25 miles. I took it easy and did not use the paddles and on the drive back, it popped the same message about 5 miles from home. So I got home and called Audi Frederick in Maryland as I service it there (really just been doing oil changes) and made an appointment 2 weeks out.
So I drove it to the dealer last Thursday and it shifted perfectly fine and with no error on the dash and I did not even clear the second one.
Audi Frederick called me on Friday stating that they could not replicate the error but it had been raining that day and they needed to repeat it on Monday when the roads are dry. So I got a call today stating that they need to further investigate and it would cost $300 as they have noticed that there is a communication error.
I do have Fidelity Platinum which I bought from Audi Frederick in 2020 and I’m hoping that it would cover the cost.
I have always driven the R8 with ease and have never abused it so I’m hoping it would be something minor. It’s been an excellent car and all I’ve done is simple oil changes every 5000 miles.
Please advise with any input and advice. Thank you!

It could be a number of items
  • hydraulic unit
  • pressure accumulstor
  • pump
  • relay
  • control electronics

the problem is getting someone who knows what they are doing to be able to isolate and test each.

At the surface the service manager felt that my abrupt downshifting may have thrown the change of gear match with the speed that I was on which was around 45-50 and tit registered as a mismatch and threw an error.

I would know more today and I will share here.
My error messages began appearing more frequently. It ended up being the Pressure Accumulator. Relatively inexpensive and fast repair.

Sometimes your own research is more accurate than your Tech's opinion. My Tech was insisting on replacing the expensive Accuator without any explanation However, my VAGCOM was indicating the hydraulic system was loosing pressure. The pressure would go from 44 bar and then drop below 40 bar over a 10-15 minute period (depending on the temperature).

Most of the good R8 techs end up at independent shops making more money, not dealing with ridiculous flat-rate and warranty work.

OP, suggest you find a tech who has a history working on these cars at an independent shop if the dealer just tells you to "replace everything."

Have not got a call from the dealer today with findings. Am just wondering. Let’s see what they say.
The only other thing I can think of about transmission is that once in a while at a traffic light stop in auto mode the gear will slip into Neutral which I believe was normal.

Going into neutral at a prolonged stop is normal to avoid wear on the throw out bearing.
Ok so got a call from Audi dealer and they think it is the Transmission Control Module as they stated that there is a break in communication to the transmission and that is causing the issue. They have ordered the part and Fidelity Platinum is paying for it. She said the total cost is around $4k for this fix and if this does not fix it they will go from there?
break in communication to the transmission and that is causing the issue.
I think it's more likely the harness issue rather than the actual unit. There was an issue of earlier cars using tin-plated terminal connectors that corrode more easily unless they verified that there are issues with the wires that connect directly to the ECU. Let's hope it's actually the TCU unit and not the harness or any of the sensors that a proper diagnostic should have given you.

Thanks and that makes a lot of sense. Do you think they will also change the harness if they are changing the actual unit? I do drive more as an automatic and less with paddles:-( since I live in the Washington DC metro area and traffic here is a nightmare.
Is there a way to get measurement on remaining clutch life? It is unrelated to this problem but I am thinking long term.
I have put 15000 miles on the car in a little over two years and it could have been more but I try not to drive it in the winter as have had one scary close call a year of so ago.

Can't wait to get it back!! The only other thing that I need to get fixed is the sport button as it stopped working a few months ago.

Thanks much!

Highly doubt it.

Yes the system can give you several clutch index numbers and you can calculate the approximate clutch lining wear off those numbers. You can ask them to get those numbers. You're going to need the numbers:

Clutch fully closed position at time of adaptation (when clutch is new) - Has ID of "010/3"
Clutch fully closed position actual - Has ID of "010/4"

Assume:

010/3 = 1252 bits
010/4 = 1372 bits

* bits is just a unit of measurement taken from the clutch position sensor.

1372- 1252 = 120 bits

120 bits x 1 mm/80 bits = 1.5 mm of clutch lining wear, which is about 25% worn I believe.

This happened to me, got the gold-plated replacement, no problems since.

Sorry to hear you are having problems - hopefully you get to the bottom of it. I've just had a near gearbox approved under Audi warranty. I'm sure if there has been some failure you will be covered!

Thank you. Did you have Fidelity Platinum or Audi Factory Warranty? I am hoping mine is TCU solves the problem as the dealer is thinking.
The dealer called me on Friday and mentioned that there is a 2 week delay in the part and that they will keep the car until then. They have given me a Q5 as a loaner which I am just holding on to as returning it will have them sit on the car for longer. I do not like the Q5 although asked for something larger so I can do a roadtrip and was told that they were not sure if they could get anything larger approved since I am coming from an R8? That kinda annoyed me but I didn't say anything:-(

You used the wrong adjective, you should have said something better 😉

I had extended Audi warranty, I am in the UK. Only coming from an R8.... haha. Typical Audi. I have a A5 sportback S-Line on loan for a month already - Its okay I quite like it.

Let me know if the new part doesn't solve the problem. I've had every clutch and gearbox problem under the sun. Replaced a lot of different parts and learned how each one helped. Let me know!

Thanks will do. The part is back ordered and they will give me an update tomorrow. Hopefully it will be in and replaced and solve the problem. Operationally, the gears are shifting perfectly normal as I drove it to the dealership that is 30 miles away and the car drove flawlessly.
I have the loaner Q5 parked in my driveway and I have not driven it:) I might have to start driving it from next week if they are unable to find the part and hold on to the R8.
Update- The problem remains unresolved.

The error code was P0944- Hydraulic Pressure Unit Loss of Pressure

My R8 is still at the Audi Dealership from the last one month and they have changed the following thus far but the issue still exist:

1) TCU Unit
2) Accumulator

They installed the Accumulator today after installing the new TCU Unit and the issue is still not fixed.

The next item they are changing is the Hydraulic Pump. They are going to have the warranty approval tomorrow and then order the part The car has been gone for a month.

As skar829 suggested that there were possibilities of tin-plated terminal connectors that corrode and not connect properly to the ECU.
I mentioned this to the Audi dealer and was told that their Certified Tech has 15 years of experience working on High Performance Audis so I am in good hands :-(

The car drives and shifts perfectly normal but throws the Gearbox Malfunction error which is what they are troubleshooting.

It is very frustrating as the car has been an absolute pleasure ever since I have owned it and I have put over 15000 miles on it.

Lol, but do they have experience working on R8's specifically?

You can ask them to go back and read the training materials on the R8s, especially this page:

and this page:

You should ask them again did they specifically measure voltage on G270? Seems like they're just throwing parts at the problem.
