This thread has been started for people to recommend ... or notify others of systems worth considering ... that enable an owner to track their car while they are not driving it themselves.

I'm certainly interested on this kind of suplimentary system ... so will be looking into this myself ... needless to say if I find anything worth mentioning ... I'll post it in here.

Nice find JampoTT ... I was struggling to find anything other than systems aimed at fleet management ... i-Mob seems to fit the bill better than any of the fleet management systems ... I did find the following website ... flash version - html version ... although I prefer the i-Mob's ability to immobilise your car ... or indeed call it up and immboilise it if you get car-jacked.

Any additional information on the i-Mob would be very useful.

I saw this system some time ago at the motor show. The killer is the monthly subscription.

I have some vague memory of meeting them at a motor show a few years ago, and remember they said they would sell "SIM free" to enable you to put your own SIM in and avoid monthly charges.

They are many systems on the market. Just do some digging on the net to find the best one !

I spotted this site earlier this morning just as the doorbell rang when some of my partners relations decided to drop in on us ... but I'm not sure it's for me ... although others might like it's functionality.
However, I like the idea of being able to call up the car's position on a map ... and even see what speed it's doing etc ... but I have to agree the ongoing costs could be a bit steep.

That would be useful ... presumably you'd only pay for calls when you are actively monitoring the system ... so could get a "pay-as-you-talk" type sim to minimise costs and line rental ...

Indeed there are ... trouble is most, if not all, of the ones I found last night and earlier this morning are aimed squarely at fleet management ... the i-Mob system JampoTT posted a link to seems to be closest to my requirements so far ... although I'll keep looking ... it's not as though I need to find it by the end of this month ... lol

Yes Paul. If its "SIM free", you can buy a cheap pay-as-you-go SIM. The system works by sending sms messages with data to another mobile of yours, plugged into a laptop (or a laptop with a data card & sim).

You will therefore pay only for the SMD text messages transmitted.

The i-mob I posted the link to was the first device to pass THIS YEAR'S new Thatcham Approval. The old "Q" rating is no longer relevant.
