So, 90% of what we hear on the site is about how mag rides suck. That makes sense because people pretty much only come on here to talk about how ridiculously expensive they are to replace and that they are guaranteed to fail. And those are both true statements.
I've found each set lasts about 30k miles and repaired at dealership is a heavy fee. Of course, you can go with coilover like from Mr. Ahlamn and be done with the problem forever while getting better performance (just don't expect him to deliver them to you at the local gentleman's club because I tried and he refused) or you can get Raf to sell you a refurbished pair. Both are great options.
BUT, the Germans are pretty good at their jobs and it's always confused me why they kept using this product when it's known to fail. I used to think it was because it was good recurring revenue for them selling these things when they break.
Now I've realized they used them because they really are that great. They are fantastic. Truly amazing at their job. Their job is to be comfortable when you need comfort and stiff when you want to push the car. I don't claim to know a lot about the stiff side and how they compare to other options on the track, as I don't track my car or push it hard enough where I ever need them even to be stiff.
But I do claim to know a bit about comfort. I've ridden for nearly 80,000 miles on mag rides in every conceivable condition. And I have spent the past few weeks truly test driving cars including the Hurucan and the gen 2 without mag rides.
What I have realized is that driving on decent roads you really don't need the mag rides. The hurucan and the gen 2 performance are about the same comfort.
But as a daily driver who goes all over the country in tmmy gen 1, and who spends a decent amount of time in industrial parks where there are a lot more ridges in the roads or creases, the mag rides truly make the car liveable as a genuine daily driver. I'm not even saying tolerable, but actually comfortable.
I truly am amazed at how well they work for that daily comfort on bad roads. I ❤ mag rides.
