Is the Audi R8 considered a supercar / exotic?

It's a car. It's got 10 cylinders, insanely fun to drive AND you don't see 4 million of them on the road daily. Whether it's "Super" or not, is up to me to decided. Not the car meets in the area. If they want to let me in with my car, great. If not, that's just fine. I'd rather be driving with my spare time.

I think of this whole scenario like the way I would look at a job interview. I'm interviewing them as much as they are me. If they don't want to let an R8 in, I'm not interested in being there to start with. We're obviously on different wave lengths.

Any way you look at it, it's all just rationalizations for "a" is superior to "b," and therefore, "I" am superior to "you." <eyeroll>

That's what this whole definition exercise REALLY boils down to.

Screw it all. Just drive the thing and be happy.

This notion of "just an Audi" got me thinking today when I saw a few A4, A6, S4, etc cars.

The R8 is really just an Audi superficially, it has more in common with the Lambo than any of the other current Audi models, including the RS variants. That's what makes this car so special and worthy of collecting. When Audi sadly transitions to EV, that shared drivetrain with Lamborghini will no longer exist. Lamborghini will continue to develop hybrids, turbocharged engines, etc, meanwhile Audi's flagship will be a damned rebranded Taycan. So this is Audi's last supercar, folks!!!

To be honest the only people that I've seen debate this are people who wouldn't ever be able to own one. Not trying to be pretentious with that statement but it's what I've observed.

The R8 is absolutely a supercar and this is coming from a Porsche fanboy who doesn't think the 911 is a supercar.

I think quite the opposite... only the people that own one try to promote/defend it as a supercar.

Guess we hang out with different crowds. I can't imagine how embarrassed my buddies (with way nicer cars) and I would be even having the conversation.

But those are the only times, outside of blog posts, that I've seen this discussion come up (not only the R8 but the Huracan and some McLarens too). I'm not offended by it - it's not like there's a hard definition for all these classifications anyway.

It's a Supercar to me. Do I need to spend over $300k or 400k to be called a supercar. Every time I get in mine and drive, it ticks both boxes, and that's all that matters. I guess everything is bigger in Texas, along with egos, no offense, I love the state. But afterall, these are opinions.

I believe this has more to do with the mentality of one single idiot that organizes cars and coffee here in San Antonio. I have never been to one and hearing this information makes me want to start a Hill Country Cars and Coffee. All cars welcome accept for whatever that guy drives. I am this level of petty.
The “all cars welcome…” comment made me laugh so hard

^ Yep, the GT3 is one car I would consider trading in my awesome new R8 for………actually not really. I would still rather have the V10.

If I were to trade out of my R8 some day, it would probably be either for a Ferrari, Lambo, or a McLaren. Problem is, Ferrari is all in on turbocharging, McLaren is eventually going to dump the V8 (check out the Artura), and Lambo is holding on but I already basically own a Huracan with my V10 so the only better option is an Aventador which is insanely expensive.

This 602 hp R8 is looking like a keeper….
Ditto.

According to San Antonio's Cars and Coffee event page, an Audi R8 is not considered a supercar / exotic. I've been to tons of shows all over Texas, and in every single circumstance, an Audi R8 was considered an exotic/supercar. The event organizer also doesn't consider a Porsche 911 GT2 RS/GT3RS or a GT3 to be worth of parking up front either. (For those wondering, I'm not the same Joe as the one who posted this comment on the facebook page, it just so happens that we both coincidentally have the same name)

Thoughts?

This cars and coffee makes no sense 😂

I harbor contempt for gatekeeping in any enthusiast context whether it be cars, watches, art, computers, homes etc. It seems like some of the personalities/ organizers are using this as an excuse to get their rocks off by attempting to control some trivial event. I don’t need validation from some muppet in oakleys telling me his opinion on whether or not one of my cars is exclusive enough to be at the free car show, It’s absurd. This is the same kind of knob who tries to bully people in a HOA about shrubbery size or act like a massive twat in PTA meetings.

The concept of a cars and coffee originally was such a cool idea because car enthusiasts are usually super inclusive as a crowd. Growing up in northern VA you could show up in anything from JDM to classic porsches and people would enjoy it. Currently I’m lucky enough to daily a r8 and 991.2TT and don’t need to be given a special slot to validate my ego. They make me happy and fulfill different experiences. It seems to me that depending on geographics, C&C events have just devolved into fragile egos peacocking to each other. Cest la vie.

Anything with a v10 let alone mid-engined is special to me… driving the r8 feels like you’re driving art. Non-car people at my work will ask me about it and are usually floored to hear that it is 11 years old.

Since when is San Antonio Car Narvana.

On the back of my R8 I'm gonna hang that big sack of balls thing that I see on trucks. That to me signifies a man who is confident in his rig. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
