RAF from Nagengst was great to work with. Just replaced my magrides with their rebuilt units. They look great, installed easy and I couldn’t be happier. I highly recommend them. RAF is the real deal.

The service center at my local Audi company dealer noticed that one of my front mag shocks was leaking, and gave me a quote of $4025.12 to replace ONE shock. I declined this quote because of the high price, and the fact that they did not at even discuss the need to replace the shock on other side at the same time.

I had read positive reviews in R8Talk about the refurbished shocks from Nagengast, so I decided to give them a try. I requested a quote on replacing the 2 front shocks from them, and got a prompt reply from Raf. After sending him the money by PayPal, my 2 shocks arrived about 10 days later +/-.

I used an independent Audi shop to install these 2 shocks, and was told by them that one of the back shocks was also leaking. So I repeated the process by ordering the 2 rear shocks from Nagengast, and again received the shocks a short time later. My local shop again installed these rear shocks.

I took the old shocks, re-wrapped them in the boxes from Nagengast, and shipped them back to them at no cost to me using the shipping label provided by Nagengast. I quickly got the credit from them for the return of these original shocks.

It has not been a long time since these refurbished Nagengast shocks were installed, but they seem to be working great. My experience with Raf at Nagengast has been excellent. After the return credit, my total cost of replacing all 4 shocks including installation by my independent shop, was only $5118. This was a huge savings over the dealer's quote for one shock.

I’m going to order some of these most likely.

Nagengast - can you please confirm that when they rebuild these, they are exactly to spec with OEM? And are filled with the same oil? I just want to make sure. It’s odd to me that none of the rebuilt shocks have ever been reported to “leak”.

It’s not a quality issue with OEM shocks - it’s just simply inevitable. No matter how “sealed” you think they are, they will eventually leak. The electrical current makes the oil thicken and it essentially tries to get out. That on top of the fluid being “squished” in spirited driving eventually leads to the oil finding a way. I just find it odd the shocks have never leaked - certainly they have, and it just hasn’t been reported.

And keep in mind the oil in the shocks actually has metal in it (that’s what reacts to the current and thickens it). I want to ensure these are being rebuilt with the same.

If I take one apart, what will I find? The same?

We do our best! Our company has been repairing shocks and suspension parts since 1983, so while Delphi/BWI doesn't have specification sheet of the shock readily available to compare the them, our thorough and precise work proves to last.

If you'd like identical as OEM, you should probably go with one of the other vendors or straight through Audi dealer. We use proper magnetic fluid in all magnetic ride shocks we repair. If you'd like more information, you are more than welcome to visit our factory in Gdansk, Poland.

Ok, so are these rebuilt like OEM or not? Confused by the answer :) and it’s cheeky to suggest any of us would visit the factory in Poland.

“If you'd like identical as OEM, you should probably go with one of the other vendors or straight through Audi dealer.” Of course we want like OEM, that’s the entire point of staying with mag and not going to coilovers.

I’m just making sure the shocks are meant to be OEM rebuilds, and not cheaper because there’s some corner being cut somewhere.

There are certainly no corners cut. What I was trying to say that OEM shocks appear to have a flaw from the factory that our repairs seem to put remedy to. To answer your question though - we don't have OEM specifications to know what was in their magnetic fluid and what kind of seals were used in them.

You're still welcome to visit our factory. Gdansk is a beautiful city!
