Need some advice.... ECM Failure?

Car is a 2009 4.2.

Brought to the car into Audi dealership due to a rare issue where the car would randomly die at idle (EXTREMELY infrequent issue - like one in 500 stops).
They say they have no signal from ECM 2 whatsoever (?) so they need to order a new ECM. 3k in parts/labor. I approve. They do not inform me of any other issues and say this is the fix.

They then plug in ECM 2 and say ECM 1 gives no signal - they suddenly up the cost to 6k in parts/labor to replace the other ECM.

How would they not have caught this during the initial test? Did they have to plug in a functional, second ECM to know that they wouldnt get a signal from ECM 1? How was I driving the car without issues if they suddenly have no signal from ECM 1? They say the car will no longer start and that they have to purchase the 2nd ECM. I reluctantly approve this (I don't have a choice, car doesn't start).

When I brought the car to them, it ran perfectly fine but would occasionally die at idle.

Car has been at Audi for 2 weeks - now waiting on 2nd ECM to deliver. Car is clearly in worse condition than when I brought it in and no longer even starts/runs. Am I being scammed / taken advantage of? Has anyone else had a similar issue? Should I refuse to pay for the parts/labor?

It makes no sense that they wouldn't catch the 2nd computer failing until they plug in the 1st / additional replacement. How the hell was the car driving without problems before?

What should I do?

Edit: to make things worse... I always garage-keep the car. ALWAYS. They leave it out on their lot and we have a hailstorm last night and the car has gigantic hail dent damage all over the roof and hood. Service is closed on weekends so I have no idea if they cover this or not . LOL.

I am sorry you are having this issue. This is a rare issue and haven't seen very many of these, especially with the R8. There is some weird things that can happen with these but I think there is more to it than what the advisor is telling you. I don't think you are being scammed but not sure they have the full story of whats going on. Because this car runs 2 ECMs, a certain method of programming has to take place to get everything to communicate and program properly. It is a bit of a pain. So they might have bricked the 1 ECM if not done properly. You have every right to ask for the old parts too if you think you are being scammed. They are a lot of different avenues this could go down and what the root issue is.

Also regarding the hailstorm, they are at fault for that. They should know better than to keep any high profile car outside during a storm. You may not get your car back for a while while that is being fixed.

Let me know the progress and I can try to answer any further questions you may have.

Here was the advisor’s exact reply.

“
Ok quick update again, now the car isnt starting , we replaced ecm 2 but now its ecm 1 that we cannot get to communicate. The part is coming from la, so it will be next week before I can maybe have it done. Im sorry man... Let me know what you want to do - Update your satisfaction at any time here httpremoved - Justin”

Right now, the other ecm is throwing codes. Sometimes we can replace them individually but now the other has failed. Its probable there was water damage to them before hand. No once they have been recoded you cannot program them back. - Update your satisfaction at any time here http:removed - Justin”

If the second ECM didn’t fail until they plugged the new one in.... is it safe to assume they likely bricked it?
Then they try to put it on water damage beforehand... wouldn’t I have already had the ECM brick on my own if that was the case..?
