Hey guys - just took delivery of a new 18' RWS. In setting up my media, I have the following questions and issues:

1. Is Audi connect required to get the Google Earth imagery as part of the navigation? My dealer did not install the AT&T SIM card or the wireless data trial. Any insight to setting this up? When I try and load the Google Earth setting in the nav screen, it has a small Google logo with a loading bar that only goes halfway.
2. I was told that Apple CarPlay is configured and operates thru the Auto smartphone interface option. However, when I hard plug into my RWS to my iPhone, I get an message that it does not detect any smartphone devices. I'm using a original Apple lighting cable and have my iPhone X to the latest firmware. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I havent tried an apple cable, only the audi one. In the iphone under cellular you must select all of the apps that you allow to pull data under cell vs wifi. The phone screen needs to be unlocked before it connects.

I connected in the ashtray type area, it has two usb, both worked.

Congrats on the RWS!! I'm up to 350mi on mine now, and can't get enough time behind the wheel ;-)

I'm also stumped on getting CarPlay to work, been trying for days and scouring the various Audi forums to no avail. I've plugged it in with a variety of lightning cables, sequence of actions but still get the darn "no device supporting the audi smartphone interface found' message. I go to my 2018 Q7 with Virtual ****pit or son's 2016 GTI and CarPlay works perfectly fine there :-| The Q7 popped up a nice 'CarPlay compatible iPhone found' message.

I'm wondering if the RWS has a specific firmware revision that is buggy, I'm contacting the Service Dept today to see if they can shed any light, but holding my breath I don't hear 'we haven't seen that before'.

Cheers

Yes, Audi Connect is required to get the Google Earth maps.
In the US, there is a 6 month free trial, so the dealer should install the SIM card and needs to initialize the service online. Should have been part of the PDI or at least should have been done at the time of delivery.

Thanks for answering that question. I have the SIM card separate and will try to install and setup with Audi connect directly.

I too am having similar problems. I have my SIM card in and I am all registered with myAudi most things seem to work but how do I get google street view working? Also via the myAudi app on my phone I thought I sent a location to the car but when I got in the car I couldn’t find it in the MMI anywhere, any suggestions?

Cheers,
Dave

Still no luck with me on the Apple CarPlay. Not sure if there needs to be a firmware update via Audi connect or the dealer.

Also no dice on getting Audi Connect working. I've registered for an myAudi account and after creating a Audi connect account and trying to add subscription, I get a "Vehicle not found" error. Time to contact Auto connect or my dealer directly.

I'll keep all others posted on progress and feedback.

The dealer needs to input the VIN into their system. That's why you get the 'vehicle not found' error.
My salesman had to call someone, then it was simple.

So via Audi Connect, under the car picture, there's two buttons "Audi connect plan (which is your data mgmt)" and "Audi connect services (which is your navigation updates and app widgets such as twitter, news/ destinations, etc)."

Select Audi connect plan then you input the SIM Card number to activate the data and your trial begins. It's unlimited the first 6 months then after that it's 6GB for 540 Days. This is required for Google Maps, not Apple Carplay or Andriod Auto. I also use this for my BlackVue Dashcam to connect to the Cloud.

If you're not seeing your car on the very first step (Audi Connect), then probably reach out to the dealer. I was able to add my own vehicle via VIN on Audi Connect as well as activate my SIM card all thru the webpages. That only thing I reached out to the dealer is for the "Audi connect User Management" activation under "Audi connect services". I don't believe this is even useful for the R8 since it's more for those cars with remote un/locking and remote start.

Apple Carplay works great for me via OEM Apple Cable, AmazonBasics Cable as well as the Audi MMI Lightning Coiled Cable. Just plugged in the phone and accept Carplay (first time only) and it just works.

I called the 1-800 number myself yesterday and they activated the sim. I then went to MyAudi or whatever the site is, added my car, and it showed with the 6-month trial. Jumped in car and it worked fine after going into menu and activating it.

Did the same thing today and finally got the Audi connect working. Looks like I just need to solve the Audi smartphone and Apple CarPlay issue. Still not sure why it won’t recognize the phone in the Audi smartphone menu on the MMI.

Hey DoubleLow7, Drove my RWS by the Audi dealership today just to see if they could quickly figure out the RWS not finding Carplay device issue... they couldn't figure it out either, sat in a showroom S3 and bam the phone was discovered without issue. The service specialist found no bulletins on the issue, so thinks the car may have been incorrectly coded at the factory. So I'm forced to drop it off one day so they can fully wire up their diagnostic equipment and mess with the coding.

This is exactly what I figured would happen if I went to the dealer. I've noted that my MMI Software Version is: 1364 and not sure if that or the Media Driver version have anything to do with getting this to work.

2018’s built after April did not have CarPlay but there will be a software update soon to add it back. Not sure why the later builds don’t have it as the first 2018’s did.

Thanks Easy2Speed for the insight, at least now I don't feel like I'm crazy. How did you find that out?

That's totally bizarre, but now I think about it is the only CarPlay capable Audi with just a single screen within the VirtualCP, so perhaps there were usability/system issues to still iron out.

Do you guys know what happens after 6 months trial? do they charge you? or automatically stops after 6 mo?
You can go in and setup an account Audi.com or My Audi.... and then pay monthly or set-up other payment options after the 6-month trial. I can only assume you won't/can't be charged without your credit card. So it should just stop after the trial.

After the 6 months you will get a notice that your initial trial is expiring; do nothing because the extended trial will then seemlessly begin. It is only 5gig and then once it is depleted the internet access is simply disconnected unless you opt to pay $10-15 per month (in the US). As I recall there is one price exclusive for the data and the car and a token discount for it if you make your car a device within your AT&T account.
