First off, I am a car guy and have owned multiple Audis over the years. The last couple Audi's I had were still under certified warranties and I sold them before they expired.

I just bought a 2017 R8 with 24k miles, and I am trying to weigh whether or not to get a warranty from Fidelity. I currently have one quote for around $5k for 3/yr 36k miles (all from date and mileage of WARRANTY purchase, not car mileage)

Are there any common failure points on these cars? I know mag ride was an issue in the Gen 1, but to be honest if they failed I would probably just go coilovers. Also, the car already has a tune and exhaust (OEM headers), I know that can be an issue for the manufacturer warranty but not sure about Fidelity.

If anyone has any insight I would appreciate the feedback. TIA

Re: warranty - I mean it's a matter of personal peace of mind. If your pockets are deep AF and you have no issues dropping 5-10-15k if something was to go wrong then I would say it's not worth it. But if you'd rather not, then spending the money now is worth the peace of mind.

I got it on my car for 2 years (I wouldn't be keeping it longer than that) but could have just as easily passed due to my shorter periods of ownership but I typically get warranty on all my vehicles. So think about how long you plan to keep the car for, if a while then worth having it.

With warranty, I always think it's one of those, have it and not need it being better than needing it and not having it scenarios.

Yea that is what I am thinking as well. I mean I can drop $10k for a repair if I NEED to, but nobody ever WANTS to lol.

I guess I'm more trying to fish out the common issues that may arise with ownership. If this were a first gen I wouldn't even ask and would jump right on a warranty for mag ride / AC alone. I plan on driving this pretty hard, I am not that far from VIR so I plan on tracking it as well. I'm browsing around for a nice set of OEM wheels for a dual street/track setup as well.

For the peace of mind alone, the warranty is worth it.

Not only did my warranty cover a $950 TPMS & a $6K AC repair but also a $50K new engine. I will never have another car without a warranty.

At the end of the day, unless you can take a hit, I highly, highly, highly, highly recommend a warranty. Worst case you can cancel the Fidelity at any time and get your pro-rata share of the payment term refunded.

If u don't abuse your car and you don't want to get ripped off the don't pay thousands of dollars for "peace of mind".
I took great care of mine and the engine failure was likely due to a bad casting of a rod bearing. So even taking care doesn't prevent any anomalies like I faced. While I don't recall the exact warranty cost at the time - maybe $5K - it saved me 10x that amount. The AC was a common failure and the warranty saved me as well.

Gen2 seems to have potential issues with the leather on the dash -again, an anomaly- and IIRC other forum members mentioned that replacement being quoted upwards of $10K.

While several thousand may seem like a rip off to some, I still believe the warranty is one of the best purchases out there and worth every penny - even if you do take care of your R8. To each his own.

Figured I’d chime in on this as well as someone who recently purchased the car and did a lot of research on aftermarket warranties.

For me the r8 (2018 non plus, 22k miles) was a dream car and something I plan to keep long term. I was able to get the fidelity platinum warranty 7yr/60k mile from the date of purchase in 2022 for $8k. A decent check upfront but at $1,150 / year, to protect every major component of a high performance vehicle, i considered it a bargain. Given how pricey repairs can get, I expect the policy will pay for itself in my ownership period, and if it doesn’t, I’ll count my blessings that I have an exceptionally well made vehicle.

Some key takeaways from my experience:

  • If the car is under factory warranty, you can get the Audi platinum protection extended warranty. No go if factory warranty is expired.
  • My car was under factory warranty and this meaningfully reduced the cost of the fidelity plan. I was looking at another 2018 non plus with similar mileage that was out of factory warranty and lt priced at ~$12k.
  • Comparing coverage from Audi vs Fidelity, Audi would only provide coverage for 2 years beyond the expiration of the factory warranty , and was 2x the cost of a comparable fidelity warranty.
  • If your car has a tune, I’d skip it. Warranty administrators look for any reason to deny a claim, and TD1 will result in a swift kick in the ass. YMMV but I certainly wouldn’t risk it.

It's a gamble for sure. Prior to a car purchase, some folks get a professional pre-purchase inspection (PPI) and know up front most of the issues (leaky shocks, faulty A/C compressor, etc) and can either negotiate a repair, knock off some $ from asking price or eat the cost if the deal is too good to pass on.
Then there are folks who buy a car unseen and have a great luck for many years to come.

And then there are individuals like myself that bought the car sight unseen/no PPI and had to go through the learning process of the above. Though if you are savvy with parts (i.e. buying our magrides vs new OEM shocks) and have quality independent shops in the area to choose from, instead of going to the dealership - you can save lots of $$$.

In the end it comes down to the convenience factor and how much do you value your own time. Perhaps it is your hobby to dabble on your own car - everyone is different and there is no perfect answer.

I appreciate all the feedback. I have a quote for 36/36k with $100 deductible for $3100, up to 84/85k for $6k and everything in between through Assurant, Fidelity is roughly $2k more on every level.
Has anyone worked with an Assurant warranty?

I bought a Merc S63 AMG with 22k miles on it a few years ago, and I bought a big extended warranty for it. I think I paid like $6500 for the full coverage warranty from CarChex, for 6 years and 70k miles or something like that. I only used the warranty one time for a repair that was about $2000 cost. Otherwise, my car was trouble-free all the way through the 6 year term. In the 7th year of my ownership, after my extended warranty was expired, I had $20k in repairs. So, my luck with that warranty wasn't so great. I paid $6500 and got $2000 in savings.

I'm definitely going to be considering this when I decide whether or not to go extended warranty on my 2023 R8 that's inbound this summer. But, I do have plenty of time to think about it.
