I really want to install my radar display in the rear view mirror. I know radar-mirror.com does it for a "reasonable price" ($599.) Unfortunately, in the process, they remove the compass display. Long ago, I've decided that the compass is an integral part of our cars, and we cannot live without it. So, I have to do my own ...

Just bought a used mirror assembly from flee-bay (it is just to try it out. In case i screw it up, I will have a spare.)

It is fully packed inside
Wood Bumper Rectangle Automotive lighting Skateboard

The plastic support part (second from the bottom) is taped to the mirror. It is a pain in the, ehm, neck to separate the mirror from it.

Once you remove it, you have to clean the residue on the back of the mirror (again very painful process. It took me hours to clean, without scratching the mirror.) On the left, you can see the clean rectangular area for the compass. I am keeping it :)

It is a simple two way mirror. From the front, it looks like a real mirror where the foamy tape and compass are. The compass display is visible, when the LED lights up.

Below, I just hold the mirror in front of the escort radar's display (ignore the refraction, I think it'll look nicer once I place the display in the right spot.)

Next, I am going to order a new display for the Escort (I am going to make the original and "in the mirror" ones switchable. Why, you may ask. Cause I want to. :) )

And finally, when I place the new display behind the mirror, the new assembly will obviously not fit inside the housing (I do not want to cut the board to make the new display fit. To close the gap, I have to 3D print an adapter of some sorts (no idea how close I can match the color of the original housing.) Either that, or cut out a hole on the black plastic support piece for the new display. We'll see which one works.

Now I see why radar-mirror charges $599 for this. But, hey, I have my compass :)

That’s some impressive custom work! I agree with you, it’s much better to keep the compass if you can.

Please post updates as the project progresses. I’m surprised radar-mirror hasn’t figured out a way to do this by now; I’m guessing they just decided not to.

You do NOT have to have the compass removed to install the radar mirror. Here is on old thread where some members have installed the radar mirror without removing the compass. Posts 13 and 15 show examples.

Those are Gen1. In Gen2, there really is not much space inside the mirror housing for a second display. The control board is simply too big. On top, Escort Max360ci has a bigger display.

If, however, someone found a way to squeeze it in, I’d appreciate any feedback (before I start the cutting and all that.)

radar-mirror did mine and yes Scott called me before he was about to install my display and said the same. That I was gonna lose the compass bc there’s no room to fit both. To me the radar display was more important and I have the compass on the Navi anyway so wasn’t a big deal.
