Audi have decided not to provide any support or goodwill on this, which I find very disappointing - as would anyone. When a manufacturer goes out of their way to modify a component because of a known failure, for me, it's on the manufacturer to resolve the issue, especially if the failure occurs less than 2 years after that 'modification' is performed (by Audi). I really want the car back for this weekend so I guess I'm stuck with the bill. I may continue to push the issue after the fact though - feeling a little let down.
Sorry to hear this. Disgraceful response from Audi. They modify a component because it is prone to failing, and guess what, the modified one fails as well but they won't acknowledge fault. Unbelievable.
I'm not done with them yet I will be pursuing this one via the Motor Ombudsman service. I can't believe this case won't stand up. My real problem is the way Audi corporate distance themselves from their franchises, and the franchises act powerless over Audi.
I had the exact same thing happen to mine shortly after I bought it! Mine had like 72k miles on it. I was on a cruise with some friends and had this happen. It was bad enough that I stopped right away, embarrassed with my new car problems, lol. Apparently what had happened is the coolant tank just cracked at one of the seams, so only when the coolant was hot was it leaking from it.
I let the car cool down and was able to limp it over to a nearby german shop, and they replaced it for like $400 for me out the door. They said it's quite common. And really, it's pretty minor as far as things go! I don't believe they put a re-enforced one in its place, like you guys are talking about, unless just all of the new tanks are? Anyway, it's been no problem since.
Mine was deffo reinforced (work was done in 2017 by Reading Audi), which let go in a cloud of white steam. Coolant all over the engine bay and on the exhaust. Quite the sight through rear view mirror. New bottle and strap fitted. Part nos 420121403 (bottle) and 420121263 (strap).
Yes, I realized this shortly after I posted here about this. I am now talking with Audi Customer Service about getting a refund for my previous repair. So far, it's looking promising, but no guarantee yet.

Reporting back that Audi CS did finally get back to me about this, and annoyingly they denied my refund request. Honestly, I think they should've approved it because my repair was clear as day exactly what this recall is for, but it's not worth fighting it. Oh well.
Just happened to me as well, and currently 15 miles from any dealer. For those whose tank failed a fair ways away from a dealership, did you limp it to a shop watching the coolant temp gage? Or did you call a tow?
Happened to my V10 Spyder. OEM part is crap. New OEM one is still crap, I dont see any difference. Labor to get to the crap part was high. Argggh. Sigh.
This just happened to my 2008 V8, this was one of the bracket reinforced tanks that began leaking from the seam. I have a short video of it leaking if anyone is interested, I will be having the third party warranty cover the cost.
Mine went a couple of weeks ago too big plume of steam and burning coolant smell. I now know that its been leaking for months - I'd noticed the corner of the rear window was steaming slightly. Thankfully I'd just got home so was able to top up the coolant and drive to the local dealer. The metal brace was fitted under an Audi uk recall 2 years ago.
Dealer quoted ÂŁ700 to replace cÂŁ200 for tank and fluid/ÂŁ500 labour! and after my objection has reduced to ÂŁ500.
I'll be pushing Audi UK hard to recognise the tank was faulty, it's a known fact and given the number of failures since the brace is an ineffective fix. Will see where I get to.

Mine cracked a year ago, produced a sweet scent. Limped it to the dealer with a cloud of white smoke from the engine bay but kept an eye on the engine temp and lost about a litre of coolant.
Hi all,
Ok, so heres my experience. I've had two fail in the 5 years I've owned the car. The first one I paid full price, $275 for the tank, and I installed it myself. Second one fails, and I'm pissed. So this time, I get online and do some research. Ebay has aftermarket ones that are common to an 04-15 Q7, and a VW Toureg for $39. The install takes 45 mins, and its done. I figure if it blows again in a year or two, I'm only out $39. Unless Audi has a new and improved one piece, I'll go this route. My 2 cents.
