My car is now IN THE UK!!!! (woooooooo hoooooo)

But I won't get it before Xmas (booo hissssssss)

Dealer emailed to mention Tracker options... basically a choice between Tracker Monitor or Cobra Trak.

Any pros and cons from owners?

Glad to hear its coming at last.

There are many threads on tracking devices.

If its the old "Tracker" , it works on radio signals and you have to have a Tracker equipped police car to follow it. There aren't that many of them. It a very old system and it does not work overseas.

Cobra and others (including the newer Tracker Horizon) use GPS to establish the position, direction and speed. Much more accurate and they roam overseas as well.

Cobra trak also has de-activation card that you carry with you. If the car is started and no card is within a few metres of the car, it sends an automatic alert to the control centre. Having moved my car 50 yards without the card by accident, I was pleased that the phone instantly rang to ask if I was aware that my car had been moved !!

In any event, you may well find that your insurer insists on Cobra Trak; quite a number do.

I just got a quote online from LV, just a tad over £1000 (34yrs, 4yrs NCD, 1 SP30) and no mention of a tracker at all...

Maybe I should call them and see if it reduces wtih a tracker or Cobra system.

To be honest, I'm only interested in a tracker if the insurance goes down, or if they insist on one... I'd rather spend the money on 'Gap' insurance and have the car replaced, I think...

If you go the Gap insurance route, check that you are covered for hi-jacking - some companies do not cover this as YOU have given up your car voluntarily. This is where the Cobra Track 5 system gives you the advantage of the back up of the de-activation card.

You should get an insurance premium reduction for fitting a tracker, but it will take 2-3 years to cover the basic cost. Mind you, you can't put a cost to the hassle of loosing your car, especially an R8 with an 18 month waiting list.

By the way, welcome to the Hertfordshire R8 ownership.

Try Norwich Union as well through A-Plan brokers. I'm paying £920.00. LV quoted me £1300.00 as far as I remember.

Also, do ask LV outright what tracking device (if any) they require.

P.S. L3Man replied as I write this. As noted on another thread a few months ago, I was carjacked in the Heathrow area and lost my RS4 a few years ago. Thanks to Navtrack, it was on a police transporter within 45 minutes. Don't forget that the R8 is a highly sought after and "nickable" car.

go for the cobraTrack5 thats the top of the range system and it texts your phone and you get a call within 1 minute of receiving the text.

Also apparently CobraTrack supplied all the fobs to Navtrack.

By NU Direct, do you mean online? I tapped in for a quote and it came back with £2100 and would only accept vehicle values upto £75k??

Others are quoting me less than half of this?

I'm interested in the answer to this too...

Do I phone A-plan and NU, or quote online, or pop into a branch or what?

Norwich Union insisted on having a tracker fitted, and were happy with the Tracker Monitor, which was the device recommended by my Audi dealer. However, my dealer then called me to say they wanted to fit a Cobra Trak instead, because the Monitor consumed too much power. Audi's view is that because some users may not run their cars much, the Monitor would drain the battery. The Cobra Trak is more power efficient.

Insurance is around £500, Cobra Trak was £590 ish fitted, then £100/year.

I called Norwich union direct, thro UK directory enquiries, was connected to their Indian call centre and five minutes later had my car insured at £500. Had to fit category 5 tracker(cobra). Excess of £600. Kept my 5 years protected no claim bonus. Nae problems. I had had a quote from broker for £550,but this quote expired and when broker went back to renew quote it had gone up to £899!! I then called NU direct,a different Division of the company apparently and got the far more favourable quote.
