Hey y'all! Just got word that my R8 GT in daytona gray has just been completed and should arrive in the next 6-8 weeks or so. This is my first super car and I thought this would be the perfect place to ask some general questions that hopefully y'all can help me with.

First, what are some must do things that you would immediately recommend if you were buying your R8 again? For example, I am considering doing a ceramic coating right away, any opinions on that?

Next, the break in period. I have heard so many mixed reviews on this topic. With my other cars for the majority I did not wait to break them in and never had any issues (ATS-V, M3 competition, F-pace SVR) but I did give it 500 miles before I went hard with my stelvio quadrifoglio. These are obviously not super cars and the R8 seems to be so well built that I wonder if you truly have to have a break in period of 1,000 or it can be for only 4-500 miles. One mechanic recently told me to take it easy for 500 miles, get an oil change to get the metal pieces out, and then have at it. What are your opinions on the subject? And if you say wait 500-1000 miles before you really have fun, does that mean no red lining what so ever or more so you can red line it here and there but not rapidly accelerate/push it hard etc?

I think those are the two main things that are crossing my head for now, thank you so much for your input. I am excited to be part of the R8 community!

stole this from bimmerpost

Start car, let warm for 30s-1m, drive in manual mode trying to stay out of boost and not maintaining the same RPM(staying below 4k RPM) for any length of time and engine break as much as possible.
Do this for around 5-10 miles.

Same as before, but go to 4500-5000 RPM and use 5-10 psi. Engine brake as much as possible.

At 50 miles, change the oil and leave the filter.

Repeat again but go to 5000-5500 rpm and don't be afraid to give it the beans. Still engine break, it's crucial for the rings to seat properly.

At 50 miles or so the engine is about half way through, the remaining half will take another 1k miles. (Think bell curve for "break in value @ XX miles)

Change oil AND filter at 250 miles. And again at 1k miles.

The oil changes may seem like overkill, but when you drain it at 50 miles and see the amount of metal shavings you'll be glad you did.

1st supercar and its an R8 GT. Damm you lucky.
Maybe you buy alot of Audis…?
Maybe its easier in the US to get one.
9 in Canada and sucks i did not get the allocation. The dealer owner kept it.

You will love it for sure.

Get a full PPF and ceramic coating on that bad boy (future collectable)
Take it smooth for 1000 miles (under 6000RPM) I played it safe in my case and
fallowed that rule. Even if i know the R8 is pretty much bulletproof.

Enjoy the ride and the sound ! You lucky to get one

Thanks for that! Yeah I don’t know how I got my hands on one. I called asking about an R8 and they said there’s a GT coming in June that is unclaimed…I jumped on it!

Well months later I may be picking up a Daytona GT that just got in but i would have preferred the red after seeing one...

drive it like you stole it the minute you leave the dealer. its the best way to seal those FSI valves, prevent carbon build up, throat out the exhaust, and help the car make more power as the months and miles pass. the car will love you for it.

I love that answer haha! I hope you are being serious because your answer is going against what everyone else has said. But it seems like you have been on this forum a long time and have a great car collection going. What is your take on when to get the first oil change after driving it like this?

#10 · (Edited)
oil change at 3-5k miles. and yes i'm serious. i broke all my R8s in that way. began doing it that way way back with my B7 S4. lots of threads on this here and other forums going back years. those break in intervals seem to be postulated to be thus so that new owners get used to the accel of the car etc... break in for the carbon brakes IS important, though. (i know less about this). but didn't follow those either. in fact- i tracked my 2017 R8 new out of the box and brakes were good.

i do have to say that newer audi engines have a diff design that addresses the carbon build up issue regardless.

let the oil warm up, drive it normally and get oil changed as per the car telling you.
engines are designed to rev, don't mollycoddle it and use the entire rev range.
only caveat I used is not to launch it nor use the very top of the rev range until 1k miles.
modern oils are amazing, modern engineering is amazing .... its car, use it as the designers intended.

also- i think it was on quattroworld- someone compiled data from several RS owners and R8 owners a few years ago and found that those who followed the manuf break in procedure used signficantly more oil in their cars over the next few years than those that broke them in hard.

It's true. If someone is that concerned over breaking in an engine properly- then the engine wouldn't have lasted anyway... this is why these manufacturers do this- if the engine will fail, it will do it on the 1st redline.
Another true story- I raced motorcycles back in the day, rebuild the engine... start up, let idle for 5 mins, run at half throttle then do a redline for about 2 seconds at 12k rpm, change the oil... done. Off we went ripping down the track.
The mechanics that did this were honda factory techs as well.

Congrats on the car.

Here is how I<ve always broken in my cars and they have always dynoed very high compared to the same cars owned by others. Did the same with the R8 when I got it a couple of months ago.
for first 600-700 miles:
-no full throttle, approx 2/3 RPM range max (5500 RPM on R8)
-do not lug the engine (no low rpm, high/gear load, downshift instead)
-vary engine RPMs as much as you can by driving in different situations and downshifting 1 or 2 gears every 10-15 mins if you are on a long freeway trip etc
-Ensure this is done over a few heat/cool cycles (i.e. Do not drive 600 miles in one trip and consider it done...)

Once above is done, gradually increase rpms, gas pedal and load for next few days and then let it rip and always redline the car at least once every trip. Needless to say, always wait for car to warm up properly during and after break-in.

Enjoy. :)
