The good folks at Best MOTORing bring together the LP550-2 Balboni, Lotus Evora, Cayman S, R35 GT-R, and the R8 4.2 in a handling test on a tight, twisty mountain road, using the venerable NSX-R as the benchmark. You don't need to speak Japanese to understand what's going on here. The video's in 3 parts, and runs for a total of about 30 minutes, but I thought it made for good viewing.

Enjoy!

The 2010 R8 V10 is a great car....and it is just what I was waiting for after 13 yrs with a 1991 NSX! After selling the NSX it was a long time until I found a suitable mid-engine replacement...the R8...a similar cutting edge drivable car.

We never got to try the NSX-R in the US, and Honda lost their way and never brought out the promised successor...so, thank you Audi for bringing us the R8!!!! :)

I couldn't agree more. I had a '92 and a '94 NSX and like a lot of other people who've had similar ownership experience, do feel that the R8 is the spiritual successor to the classic Honda/Acura sportscar, only with more power, more tech, and more prestige. It took me a long time to find a sportscar (that wasn't a Porsche) that didn't require me to make so many compromises as an owner.

We should all be grateful that the R8 exists.

These tight, winding mountain roads are the roads I love best. For me they define a true sports car.
This test is maybe more fun that real? ( I don't speak Japanese.) They have a discussion at the end about Traction Controls but no idea on what is said.
They use the scores made by two different drivers, each driver using his own different idea of a proper subjective score 1-10, scoring each car on only two different performance qualities: GRIP and DRIFT.

I have never been a fan of these guy's. Their head to head racing competition's usually 'contrive' the video footage so the finishes appear to be very very close. They resemble TOP GEAR in their efforts,.. more entertainment value than real quality facts.

Of course, I agree about the R8 results!! LOL

RESULTS:

1. Audi R8
2. Nissan GT-R
3. NSX-R
4. Lotus Evora
5. Porsche Cayman S
6. Gallardo Balboni (2WD)

+1 on the "R8 is the real replacement for the NSX". I still have my NSX, and the R8 has turned it into a garage queen, quite literally. It beats the NSX in handling, power, braking, sound, luxury, and even looks. It's so good that I'm going for a second one, much to the wife's chagrin...

Great choice for your next super machine! You will love the V10....and I must say, you will have one heck of a mid-engine supercar collection! What color is the new one going to be MotherT?

I'm sure I'll hold onto my V10 for a long time. I hope some day to be able to add to my collection with a (theoretical) 2015 or 16, twin-turbo V10 with 600 plus HP and a dual clutch "R-tronic" tranny....if only Audi will continue on and produce a "version 2" of the R8. I hope that they won't drop the ball like Honda did on us NSX lovers! :) :)

New V10 will be sepang blue. Should be gorgeous, although I must confess I have never seen that color in person - nor ever driven an R-Tronic. But I have faith both will be superb. It will be built the 3rd week of this month!

I brought my V8 R8 to NSXPO last October at Mosport. It was very well received - except I was not allowed to participate in the group photos. Understandable.

I made a video while there on the track. My passenger is the president of the NSX club of Canada, and he has some glowing remarks in the 2nd half of the video. Sorry if this is a repeat for some of you.

Congratulations on the new purchase! And your video is excellent. Everytime I see an NSX on the road, it brings back a lot of memories. Thanks for sharing.

Always loved the NSX. Couldn't afford one at the time. Loved my Porsche but a few things about it really bugged me and they have not changed that. The R8 is a crime of passion. It is exotic but real. Not a fantasy. Affordable luxury. Worth every penny.

Jake.....where are you in the Pacific NW?

MotherT....I wanted to go the the NSXPO one last time when it was in Oregon (I think)and was told by NSXTASY (oh, what's his name??) that I could not go with my M6! I had sold the NSX by then and hadn't gotten my R8. I was ticked off so I dropped my NSX Club membership! I do miss the camaraderie there.....but am finding that it exists here for the R8 now!!!! This is one great group of people :) :) And we are a club here, of sorts. I'm going on the Alps trip ...so yes....we are a club!!!! I would love it if we had a national/international organized club though for more events around the country and world, and an easy web place to find out when and where the events will be held. Can we find that info here, on this site???? Or do we need a new category for "EVENTS" here at www.r8talk.com???

Steve -- NSXTASY is keNSaX. His NSX made the cover of Car and Driver mag about a year ago (even with his lamb's wool seat covers!) as one of their "best cars for under $25,000". We were all very amused. NSXCA let me bring the R8 to NSXPO because I'm an instructor. Yes, NSXPO is really more of a reunion than anything else, the comraderie there is closer than I've felt almost anywhere else. Hopefully when we get enough R8's in the USA, a national club will form. But that will take a while. Nekarsulm produces about 20 per day. 20 x 5 x 50 work weeks is about 5,000 per year worldwide. I believe about 200 per year are sold into the USA, I understand there are less than 500 in the USA at this point.

Tonny -- I agree, that color blue should be stunning. I did some photochops and looked at matching blades, silver blades, CF blades, and ended up choosing the special Mugello blue blades which are subtle but still there and really gorgeous. I added CF front and rear splitters and CF mirrors. It comes with the full CF engine trim. Can't wait!

Thanks MotherT...I remember Ken well now! Spoke with his a lot in the early years of the NSX clubs, as I organized the OR/SW Washington group.

Let's hope somebody puts in the effort to create an true R8 group. But as you said, it IS a lot of work, and there aren't that many of us out there.

Incidentally, maybe one of my instructors on the track. I did the NSXPO 2 times in California. People were saying, what a schmuck...when they saw my tracking skills! :) :)
