Whether you lose power depends on the exhaust system you choose. 90% of manufacturers sell exhausts that are welded "by eye" without any engineering calculations. This leads to issues you're describing.

If you're looking for a proven solution, I can recommend the OPF delete from Capristo along with a full exhaust system. I've installed and seen many setups but Capristo stands out from the competition. Their system is fully engineered and calculated so you won't experience issues with back pressure or heat dissipation that could melt your rear lights.

Removing OPF filters along with a good tune will have the opposite effectinstead of losing power, the gains will be significant, especially in lower RPM range. The car will drive completely differently, as if it has been given a second life, while the exhaust in open mode will further amplify this sensation.

We conducted flow tests on stock OPF filters and in my opinion removing them is one of the most important things to do once your car is out of warranty. It will extend the engine's lifespan and ensure more reliable, trouble-free driving. If I bought a brand-new R8 from dealership, the first thing I would do is remove the OPF filters (this applies only to the EU version of the R8) without waiting 2 years when warranty ends.

Good question regarding the ECU. I'm not 100% sure, but you should be able to just program out the OPF because I remember asking around a couple of local tuners and they said it could be done. I suggest you do the same, just depends where you are located.

Now, there also is a second solution. Reach out to MGmotorsport (located in Poland) on Facebook. They offer OPF replacement pipes (downpipe with a sport [metal and high flow] catalytic converter) what doesn't require any ECU tuning so you can leave your car stock. My car has this exact same solution but also with a gutted exhaust (looks stock outside but inside has been modified), throw in a valve controller and your good to go for 3x less the money of any other aftermarket exhaust.
