What is the deal with gen 2 pricing?

Hi everyone, I've been a lurking for quite some time now and looking to purchasing my first R8

at first I was looking to buy a 14/15 v10+ but after months of contemplating it, getting a gen 2 v10+ seems to be much better bang for buck.

the problem I'm running into is looking at 17/18 v10+ the pricing is all over the place, from 150k to 185k all over carguru's/edmunds/fb etc

what is a fair price to pay for a nicely spec'd one with 10-15k miles and no more than 3 owners? ( this was another problem I keep running into, a lot of these cars have 4-6 owners and to me that just sounds like a lot for what is not that old of a vehicle)

also when cars are listed at a dealership how much negotiating room is there on these vehicles?

my budget is 148-155 ish, not sure if I am being unrealistic..

I think between 160 and 180 is a fairly common range and would be expected on the spec you’re looking at. But I would triple check and not put a lot of stock in the ownership History if you’re using Carfax. They are notoriously inaccurate. I have had so much trouble with Carfax in the past it’s unreal. At one time they had listed my Audi r8 as having eight owners and it’s a 2021. I’m the second owner. I had to wrestle with them to get that corrected. Just heads up

I had gotten mine for 159 with just under 15 miles on it. I feel like the lowest I have seen for high mileage plus would be around 140. They are having very interesting market trends probably due to covid and then throw in that Audi is down making the V10 people don't know what to think.

IMO R8s are similar to other exotics in that some owners flip the car quickly and move on to their next exotic. Just a sold a 2018 Porsche panamera Sport Turismo Turbo with 4 previous owners. Wasn't a problem for me or the guy that purchased from me. Number of owners matters less when it is highly spec'd/optioned.

I’ve also think there is something to be said about exotics with higher number of owners in that it doesn’t really matter. Most these people are car people and a lot of car people like to switch it up a lot, especially with exotics. I have had 7 different cars in the last 3 years and many people are like that, just want something different.

I paid 168k for a 17 V10 plus, with 13k miles in April. I think I overpaid, but it was the color combo I wanted, and the only one for sale at the time. Values seem to have dropped solely based on current cars for sale.

Bought a 1968 Z/28 Camaro a couple weeks ago, for 74k. I think that was a much safer buy as far as value goes, but that’s not the main reason I bought either car.

Also not the main reason I brought up the Camaro purchase. That was brought up because the wife thought spending 230k on a nice 458 Italia was too much to spend. So I spent 242 to show her how thrifty I am….

I think your budget is realistic. I had kind of answered this in another thread recently, but V10plus are quite rare, so I canvassed all the sites. You can see how long they have been listed to see if someone may be willing to negotiate. I was looking for a V10plus Spyder but looked at the coupes as well because there are only 3-4 2018 V10 plus Spyders (no 2019s and 2020s and newer are quite a bit more). I paid $142,997 (after watching it drop $12K over 2-3 months) with a trade, for mine (17K miles and spotless. Not even a single rock chip). Anyway, it never hurts to call and ask (I called all 3-4 dealers and all of them dropped between $3K–$5K in that first call. If they follow up with you in a week or so, that means NO ONE ELSE IS INTERESTED! The same goes for if they drop their advertised price. Just keep waiting until your color/spec comes up. I think color has a lot to do with price. I didn’t get my absolute favorite color, but I also wasn’t willing to pay $10K more for a color). -Oliver
