Has anyone wrapped their Gen1 steering wheel in Alcantara? A local interior place can do it, but would love to see pics. Thanks!

I have alcantara on the steering wheel in my S63 AMG. It collects oil from your skin and over time gets matted and gross. I purchased alcantara cleaner from Swissvax but it only helps marginally. I recently found an "alcantara brush" which is basically just sandpaper. That helped more than the cleaner did, but I wish I just had a full leather wheel.

Alcantera can last forever if properly cared for :
  • I at least try to wash my hands before I leave the house (but not always)
  • every time I wash my car I take a clean damp microfiber and wipe down the steering wheel.
  • once or twice a month I used a lightly soaped damp microfiber and again wipe down the entire wheel, focusing more on the grab areas. Then use a clean dry microfiber to dry it with.
  • Once a year I use that Sonax Alcantera cleaner sparingly as I don't like to put chemicals on it.
  • that's it
My M3 Alcantera wheel looked almost brand new when I sold the car last year and that wheel had over 90K km's on it and minimum 75 track-days.

I had alcantara on my car and it was destroyed from the previous owner. I did fix it so it was better for a while but it demands a lot of maintenance to keep fresh if you use the car a lot. Best thing is to drive with gloves. I got tired of it always looking gross worn so I changed to a leather wheel and did the airbag in alcantara instead.

If you don’t drive the car that much, want to clean it all the time or drive with gloves, alcantara is nice. Otherwise I would go for leather.

I rather have a steering wheel that keeps fresh and doesn’t need that much care.
