my wife and I are having a disagreement over Ibis White

I've been in the market for an R8 for a while now, and the timing might be pretty good for me to pull the trigger this spring.

I've found a used Ibis White, with basically every piece of carbon available. Low miles. Looks perfect.

I'm not really a color guy. I won't own another black car, but other than that, car designers generally do a great job of picking colors, and almost anything would work for me. Personally, I think the stormtrooper look is great. Showed wife some pictures, and her response was that the car looked...how shall I put it...a bit "Jersey Shore" in white. It hadn't occurred to me that white sports cars have a stigma. I think maybe she's crazy. I need some moral support here.

Anybody else think white has a stigma?

I've never considered white to have a stigma attached to it. Both of my current cars are white and I'm more than happy with the colour. Not that I'm biased of course :)

White is the new black. One of the best colors on the R8. It highlights the sideblades and fins.

But white is a pain to keep clean. Dust don't show like on a black car but every speck of dirt does.

Love the rims on that car. Cheers.

Don't know about a stigma in regards to White, although, after being behind one yesterday for a while, I kind of realized I'm glad I didn't do white. I don't know what it was, but just an aha moment that I didn't like the look of the black from behind on white. Love the side view, as the blades stand out, but something yesterday changed my mind on the overall color. And this coming from a guy who is going back and forth on wrapping my car either matte white or blue.

As for "Never own another black car"... I said the same thing, as my S5 was black before my R8. However, once I saw it, I fell in love.

Then, for your picture, I've never seen those rims on an R8??? Are those the RS5 rims?

RS5 wheels won't fit. These are specific to the R8 and were never an option in the US. Even though you can get them on just about any Audi these days, I loved them on my R8.

As for the OP's question. No stigma associated with a white car, nevermind an R8. The one you posted looks great.

Suzuka Grey is the best! Much prefer it over Ibis White; I get compliments all the time on my car. But to answer the OP question, white is a great color for sports cars, especially the R8.

To each his own, but you have a uphill hike on that one, especially since the misses has already called it too much Jersey shore... you better keep on looking..:)

PS I agree with Mkivbren, have her have a look at a suzuka grey... :)

Living in the tri-state (NY/CT/NJ) area, I can attest to the fact that NJ has its fair share of white luxury cars (for whatever reason)... so I can see where she's coming from. BUT... the R8 in white is like putting sauce on pasta. It's just very natural and a fantastic choice. The car is a bit futuristic looking, and the clean white color suits it well. Furthermore, nothing contrasts against the carbon sideblade like white! Across the industry, designers use white as their "pure" color - shows the lines of the car in the purist way possible.

When I was getting my R8, I was debating between red and white. Red won by a slight margin (could have just been how I was feeling the day I placed the order!), but white was pretty much my decision for a while leading up to the order.

But all of this said, the old saying rings true... "happy wife, happy life." :) If it's a nit-pick comment, she may just get over it. But if you think it's a sticking point, and it doesn't matter all too much to you, I'd look elsewhere. :) The great thing about the R8 is that it looks fantastic in so many colors. If you want something that pops, maybe look at Sepang Blue or Brilliant Red. If you want something more subdued and stealth, Daytona Gray is nice. Of course, there's always the "original" look, which I love - Ice Silver.

I used to think I would never get a white car. My wife always wants white. I had a lime green car, orange, red, black (hardest to keep clean), yellow. I originally thought I wanted dark gray or black for the R8 so the side blades would not stand out. But then I looked at an Ibis car and fell in love. To me the contrast with the carbon blades and black parts makes it interesting and unique. My car even has the red interior which I thought I would never do. It's not an over the top red IMO like Porsches are with the dash and everything red, so gives some more pop compared to all black. But it's all personal preference and honestly i think the R8 looks great in all the available colors.

At the risk of sounding like a sycophant, let me compliment the R8talk community. It's refreshing to see a supercar community, without a lot of the pretentiousness you see elsewhere. I think what they say about R8 drivers being real "car people" not show ponies, is absolutely accurate.

On the topic:

Canada is really limited in terms of used R8s at any given time. Finding a low mile (9000 miles) one, with a ton of unusual options (carbon exterior and alcantara), is hard. So being picky on color is unwise if you actually want to end up with a car. Having said that, I think my preference for colors would be: suzuka, sepang/red, daytona, white, silver, black, in that order. White is a good color in that it adds brigtness without being quite as shouty as say red or blue.

On this particular car, I think actually it;s the wheels that are holding me back. They look decent, I guess....but they're a standard audi design, and the less an R8 reminds you of a TT the better.

How hard is it to switch the wheels to the Titanium 5-spokes or to othe y-split wheels? Are they big $$$ or hard to find?

The titanium 5-spokes sell for around $2-3k used depending on condition. Occasionally a nice set will come up for sale here in the forum classifieds. The vendors can help as well.

You can look on this forum, look on eBay. Factory wheels are usually pretty reasonable. If you get them with a good set of tires, you can drive them for a long time, then if you sell your car, put the old set back on, and sell the set you bought, and the cost will have been minimal. Also there are a lot of cool alternative wheels you can get for as low as $2000 on up.

That car looks amazing in white!!!

This is more than just an opinion because I here it sooooo much.

White is right on the Audi R8.

Although the world has shifted its view from low wide crazy looking Ferraris and Lamborghinis to R8s and Maseratis (likely thanks to cheap corveytes doing a good 60k Lambo impression) the fact remains that as far as supercars go....The T8 is just a smidgeon on the boring side looks wise.

I remember being with friends 6 years ago at car dealerships and us all complaining that the R8 looked just like a regular car from the front...But looked gorgeous from the back and very nice from the side.

Even though the R8s looks have stood the test of time and in 2017 many people would choose the looks of a 2008 R8 over a 2004 Gallardo due to how our culture has changed...

It still needs to be the right color to show its lines, but not be gaudy looking.

White is right. Shows the lines without trying to scream LOOK AT ME

Black takes second. Makes the car look incredibly low and wide.

Gray sits at third and offers a look right between these too.

All the other colors available ate truly a personal choice.

I feel I would have an extremely hard time selling a red, rare yellow, blue, or extremely rare green R8.

But white????? Its what most people want...White or Black.

I say go for it. She will love it soon enough.

Go white- Will have best resale, if she don't like it....

MacBuster,

I'm in Calgary too. I've got an Ibis White V8 with full carbon if you want to see it in person (if the V10 isn't here).

Also, I might like the wheels, depending on price. We should chat. :)

I like it in white and like those wheels too (had them on my A4), but if the wife doesn't and the car is for you, Smart husband lets wife pick color ;) I probably like Red the best, then Silver, then White et. al., but most of the colors look nice anyway... not a decision maker for me except black seems a bit to poser-y for me. Heck, If I could find the right R8 (been looking a few months) I'd trade you wheels... those are some of my favorites regardless of what else they show up on.

I think each car best suits one or two colors: to me, the R8 looks best in white (w/black blades) or sepang blue (w/silver blades). Mine is white which really emphasizes the lines, while providing a lot of contrast not just with the carbon side blades, but with the front and rear black fascias. Add some window tinting to complete the effect... I considered having the roof wrapped in carbon or gloss black, but in the end chose not to (but could be something I do to change things up at some point).

I also love the titanium 5 spoke rotors... when shopping for winter tires and rims, I looked at a lot of OEM and aftermarket wheels. In the end I sourced lightly-used titanium rotors on eBay from Slovania (they're very rare in North America). I thing the dark gray spokes with the silver rim looks brilliant and sharper than all chrome or all black rims. Yes they're on RS5's and others, but so what? They are rarely seen on R8's here, they look awesome, and the gray/gunmetal spokes bring out a little more contrast against the white.

Beside, if you can always wrap the car to change things up or "experiment" with other colors while still protecting the original paintwork.

Car color alone cannot determine highest resale value.

Condition, mileage, options, time of year, the right buyer all factor in with the color. Cheers.

The most popular car colours today are shades of grey: white, black, grey and silver, amounting to over 70% of the total world car production.

Red, blue and brown/beige cars range between 6% and 9% each, while all other colours amount to less than 5%.

So theoretically, if your car color falls into the 70% group, you'll have a better chance of selling it, but no guarantee to get more money for it.
