FYI, I just replaced the battery and wanted to let folks know where I found a few shortcuts.
1) you don’t have to remove the windshield wipers or the top cowl. You can get the trunk tub out by lifting the cowl. It takes a little effort to get out, and re-assembly requires a second person, but it’s definitely not difficult.
2) You don’t need to remove the lighter plug from the tub. When you get the tub out, you can wiggle the plug apart from the inboard side.
3) You do need to remove the emergency trunk latch from the tub. Once disconnected, you can feed it though the hole in the tub and disconnect one cable holding things together.
4) There is a bracket holding the tub to the front frame. You can remove 2 T30 star screws from the number side to get the tub out (vs 4 on the inside of the trunk tub)
5) There are 3 bolts holding the battery down. Easy peasy.
6) I messed up during re-assembly and secured the emergency release cable first. Had to undo that and it was wayyy easier to get the tub set assembling the release as the very last thing.
7) With the trunk tub removed, the front area is completely visible. It was pretty cool to see how the battery was designed to mount at a very low point, right between the front wheels.
8) I didn’t have any lights/codes when I finished. I only had to reset the time.
9) Took less than 1 hour all-in.

Himself - what year R8 did you do this on?

Reason I ask, with my 2011 R8 V10 , there was no way in hell that trunk was coming out without moving the wipers/top plastic, the top plastic would of had to flex about 2-3cm's at an angle that would propose it was going to potentially snap rather than let anything slide out easily. That said a few people have said they've done it without removing those but nobody mentions the year of car, as I'm wondering if that may make a difference.

Would love to see someone provide a video of it. Perhaps I was too gentle with it as well though, that being said if I had forced / yanked it right out, god knows how I would of gotten it back in as well then.

Hi, here’s a short video of the battery installation without removing the wipers and all the panels. My car is a first gen V8.

The panels are quite flexible and I did not have any worries when bending them. The outside temperature was around 22 degrees of Celsius. I would definitively not try this at wintertime!

Another thought: when you have the plastic trim pieces off, this is a perfect time to cut a hole in the upper trim for accessing the brake fluid reservoir.

The last post in that thread also leads me to think it may be possible to remove the trunk without pulling the wipers using the method shown in his photos, applied on both sides.
I took the trunk out without removing the wipers or the top plastic trim.
I also used this time as an opportunity to check the frame for cracks etc.

Thanks to all of those who have come before! +1 for not removing wipers or the rear plastic cover. Just had to wiggle it out a bit. Mine apparently still had the rubber tire guards along the top, but they did not seem very well secured at all.

And, big thanks to the person who had my vehicle before for placing in a brake fluid access point =)

I just did this myself today. U do not need to remove wiper arms. U do not need to remove the top plastics. Just unbolt it so u can lift it up and bend a little to get the frunk liner out. Took a good 45min to 1hr to remove all plastics and install battery. Hardest part was unhooking the trunk release cable and getting the plastics back in after putting the frunk back in. Otherwise very straight forward job. I have no experience and it was doable for me.

The wipers are the problem, but the work around is good. I put pure nickle never seeze on the splines alast time wipers off and didn't overtighten wiper nut. Today removed after 6 months by just rocking wiper arm with a bit of force and they released.
